Death Suddenly Ends Spectacular Career of a Famous Sport
New York, May 12 – Theodore Allen, known throughout the sporting world as "The" Allen, died suddenly tonight 77. He had a notable and spectacular career. He was best known as a promoter of pool rooms and as a bookmaker. During the civil war he was in the secret service, and assumed the role of a fugitive from the Confederate states and went to Montreal, where a reward of $50,000 was placed on his head. Allen joined for the purpose of gaining information from the Confederate railers who swept down from Canada on St. Albans, Vt. He was captured and sentenced to be shot. The following day Henry ward Beecher, who was in St. Albans that day, saw Allen and sent a telegram to Secretary of War Stanton, whose instructions to release Allen came just in time to save his life.
