In 1789, Ontario
County was formed from Montgomery County. The original area was much
larger than present day Ontario County, including what is now the
counties of Allegany (1806), Cattaraugus (1808), Chautauqua (1808),
Erie (1821), Genesee (1802), Livingston (1821), Monroe (1821),
Niagara (1808), Orleans (1824), Steuben (1796), Wyoming (1841), and
Yates Counties (1823), Schuyler (1854) and Wayne (1823).
