Sixty years ago a naval officer wishing to cross from Staten
Island to Bergen, could find no person willing to undertake the job save
a bare- footed boy, who, despite the roughness of the sea, bravely rowed
him to the place of destination. The officer was so pleased with his
pluck that he got him a situation on a steamer, and that boy is
Cornelius Vanderbilt, who is now worth over
$13,000,000. Illinois State Democrat, Wed. Oct. 10, 1860. Submitted
