SHAW, Francis George Death of the Original
Slave Deliverer-New York, November 9- Francis George Shaw died at West
New Brighton, Staten Island, last night. He was one of the earliest and
most prominent contributors to and ardent workers in the "underground
railroad" by which slaves were forwarded from the south into Canada. He
was the father of Colonel Shaw, who commanded the first regiment of
colored United States troops, and who was killed at the head of his

VAN MATER, Ann
Vandervoort VAN MATER - At Castleton, S. I., on Tuesday
morning. Sept. 29, Ann Vandervoort, widow of the late Gilbert Van Mater
of Newtown, L. I., aged 88 years and 3 months. Her remains will be taken
to Greenwood Cemetery. Carriages will be in waiting at Hamilton av
Ferry, Brooklyn, at 11 1/2 a.m., on Thursday. The relatives and friends
