Agreeably to provision in the law for erecting part of the county of Ontario into a new county by the name of Steuben, they have divided that county into the six following towns, viz. Bath, Painted-Post, Frederickstown, Middletown, Canister and Dansville. It is useful and pleasant for young people, to have as perfect a knowledge of their country, as possible. The counties of this state with the number of souls, as it was in the year 1790, are now as follows: 1. Richmond........................3835 9. Ulster.........................29397 2. Kings...............................4495 10. Columbia...................27732 3. Queens..........................16014 11. Albany.......................75736 4. Suffolk...........................16440 12. Montgomery..............28848 5. New York......................33131 13. Washington................14042 6. Westchester....................24003 14. Clinton.........................1614 7. Dutchess.........................45266 15. Ontario........................1075 8. Orange............................18492 16. Ostego..................unknown To these come the new counties: 17. Rensselaer.................unknown 20. Tioga.....................unknown 18. Saratoga....................unknown 21. Steuben.................unknown 19. Herkemer..................unknown The increase of the population of this state is more rapid than of any other in the Union, yea greater than of any state in the world. The number of inhabitants doubles itself in 18 years. The population is thought to be in a good train, if this duplication is effected in 25 years. Pennsylvania increases more by European emigrants, but this state by emigrants from New-England. In the year 1771 there were 168,007 souls, black and white, in this state. This number doubled makes 336,014. But according to the census in the year 1790 the number was 340,120. There is no doubt, that the number is now about 400,000. |
