JASPER, N. Y., Jan. 28 - The
people of this town
were horror stricken on Friday morning when it was
learned that Mrs. Orpha Northrope, wife of the late
Gilbert Northrope, had
ended her life by jumping
into a well. Mrs. Northrope had been living with
her
daughter, Mrs. Bert Woodward, since the death of her husband last
June. She left the home of her daughter Thursday
morning, saying that she
was going to spend two
weeks with old friends and neighbors on South Hill,
her former home, and where she still owned a farm,
but it was unoccupied.
She seemed to be well and in
her usual state of mind when she left, but in
spite
of the efforts of Mr. and Mrs. Woodward, who insisted upon taking
her, she was determined to walk, which she did. The
farm is located in a
desolate place about one and
one-half miles from any other house, back
from the
highway. That night about 10 o'clock
the buildings on her farm were all burned, together
with the contents. As
the farm is located off from
the road and there are no near neighbors, the
only
person who saw the fire and went to the scene was Will Halninen, who
saw nothing of anyone about the premises. The next
morning Oscar Dennis,
Jerry Sherwood and Edward
Lane, hearing of the fire, went to view the
smouldering ruins. They discovered that the cover
had been removed from
the well and laying beside it
was a suit case, woman's coat and a cane,
and to
their horror in the well was the lifeless body of Mrs. Northrope.
Investigation proved that she had not entered the
well until after the
buildings burned. She was
standing in the well with one had raised and
grasped
into the stones above. She was not bruised and as there was but
little water in the well, the autopsy proved that
death was not due to
drowning, but to heart failure
and exposure.
Mrs. Orpha
Northrope was the
daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Franklin Davis and was born in this town 57 years
ago last April. She was married to Gilbert Northrope
on May 31, 1882. She
is survived by two daughters,
Mrs. Bert Woodward of the town and Mrs.
Darius
Broughton of South Canisteo, and two sons, Fred Northrope of Almond
and Lewis Northrope, who is in the U.S. service and
has recently returned
from France to Camp Upton,
where he is recovering from wounds received in
battle, and one step-son, George Northrope of
Almond. The funeral was
held from the home of
her daughter, Mrs. Woodward,
on Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock. Burial
in the
Gully cemetery. The family have the sympathy of the entire
community in their sad bereavement. Canisteo
