DEATHS
Miss Jennie Ordway Died Sunday in Pasadena, Calif.
Miss Jennie Ordway died in Pasadena, Calif., Sunday morning, Feb. 8 at 10:30 a. m., after an illness of several months duration. She had been a patient in the Monte Vista Grove infirmary for many weeks. Miss Ordway was a native of Jasper, was born here Nov. 15, 1861. It was here that she grew to womanhood and in 1887 began work as a missionary, under the Home Mission board of the Presbyterian church. She spent several years in the west in New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. Later the board sent her to Porto Rico to take charge of the school Colegio Americano at Mayaquez. In 1904 the board had opened the Presbyterian hospital at San Juan, Porto Rico. After several changes in the staff during the first two years, it was decided to divide the executive duties between a lay superintendent and a resident physician. Because of her efficiency in institutional work and her knowledge of the languages, Miss Ordway was asked to accept the position as supt. With almost no special training she was faced with problems entirely new and quite different from those of school. The fact that she was willing to undertake these duties is a testimony to her consecration in the Masters service and the fact that she continued in the work for twenty-three years is proof of her efficiency. When she became superintendent, the hospital consisted of several wooden buildings with 35 beds and 6000 patients were being treated in a year.
Although the upkeep and care of the buildings was a difficult task, the fact that the hospital was considered the best in Porto Rico, when the new concrete building was opened in 1917 speaks volumes for her ability and management. The hospital was expanded each year since and at the time of her retirement nearly 50,000 patients were treated each year.
The legacy given by Mrs. Caroline B. Seller has provided a beautiful home for the nurses, which leaves the hospital with more room for patients.
Nearly three years ago, Miss Ordway retired and planned to spend her remaining years in a little home in California in a group who like herself have given the active years of their life to missionary work, in various parts of the world.

At Painted Post, Steuben county, Mrs. MARY DAYTON OWEN, aged 31 years, wife of Elijah B. Owen, and daughter of William Steele, Esq. This sore bereavement to a large circle of friends is much alleviated by the character and the exit of the deceased. She knew in whom she had believed and was enabled in her dying hour to say -
"Jesus to thy dear faithful hand,
"My naked soul I trust,
"And my flesh waits for thy command,
"To drop into my dust."
