Born in Tioga County, NY, Sept. 1, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Harry Cornelius and Mary Ulyssus Padgett Van Vorce. She was a 1932 graduate of East Carolina College in Greenville, NC and taught first grade until she was 63. A member of the Ninty-niners Club Pettiecoat Pilots, she flew airplanes from 1946 until 1993. At the age of 40, Mrs. Monroe started sky diving and finished with qualifications for free falling.
Mrs. Monroe, at the age of 50, started hiking the Appalachian Trail, and finished it by the age of 65. She was a member and officer of the Appalachian Trail Conference-Pack. She developed an interest for snow skiing at the age of 52, skied until she was 70.
An extensive traveler all of her life, Mrs. Monroe traveled throughout the United States, Alaska, Canada, England, Mexico, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and China. Mrs. Monroe was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wadesboro, where memorial services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Robert A. Canton Jr. officiating. The family will greet friends in the church parlor one hour prior to the service.
She was the wife of the late Dr. H.B. Monroe.
Survivors include her children, Gary B. Monroe of Atlanta, GA, Susan L. Monroe of Wadesboro, Terry L. Monroe of Chapel Hill; grandchildren, Daniel B. Monroe of Lancaster, SC, April M. Monroe of Atlanta, GA and Scarlet L. Monroe of Wadesboro; brothers and sisters, Marcus Van Vorce and Lillian Hover, both of Candor, NY, Robert Van Vorce and Catherine Hess, both of Endicott, NY, Helen Chrysler of Azle, TX, Anne Mauche of Elimira, NY, Charles Van Vorce of Calistoga, CA, Loretta Nelson of Apalachin, NY and Guy Van Vorce of Homestead, PA.
