Wayne County, NY
Founded: 1823
County Seat: Lyons
Area: 1383 sq. miles of land and water

Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the land Wayne County encompasses was originally part of the Iroquois Confederacy, though it does not appear that there were any major Indian Settlements in this area when the white settlers came in 1789. Native Americans made hunting and fishing trips into this region where bear, wolf, deer and a wide variety of fish could be found in large quantities. Sodus Bay was a favorite fishing spot and a well-worn trail extended from its shores to the head of Cayuga Lake, where the Indians had permanent homes

On April 11, 1823, Wayne County was formed by combining portions of Seneca and Ontario counties.

Wayne county is the birthplace of the Latter Day Saint movement and Mormonism. Founder Joseph Smith's family lived on a farm that straddled the line between Palmyra and Manchester, where he claimed to have been visited by God the Father and Jesus Christ in 1820, an event known as the "First Vision".

Hydesville was the home of the Fox Sisters, which spawned the Spiritualist movement  in 1848.

During the Civil War, men from Wayne served in the 111th New York Infantry, under Colonel Clinton D. MacDougall.  Other regiments formed in Wayne county were the 33rd and 98th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiments and the 9th New York Heavy Artillery Regiment

Wayne County currently ranks as New York's top apple producing county.

The county is completely rural and has no cities. There are 15 towns and 8 villages.
