During the summer and fall months of 1849, epidemic dysentery prevailed in different parts of this town. Like diseases of an epidemic nature its first ravages were less manageable under medical treatment. The plausible cause could be assigned on its appearance but seemed it underwent upon some mysterious & undiscovered morbid(?) agency - as cholera - which raged at the same time in large cities and villages of our Union. Dysentery was more prevalant among the uplands of the town.
