A mysterious suit case, containing a whole wardrobe of wearing apparel and other valuable effects, secreted in an open field just south of the Erie tracks which was uncovered yesterday, has given the police a mystery to unravel. The suit case was discovered yesterday by Mrs. Van Zent while she was gathering "greens" in the field near her home. She brought the satchel to police headquarters where a quiet investigation is being conducted. A new suit of clothes, several shirts, neckties and numerous other valuables were found inside the grip. Every mark of the owner's identification had been carefully removed, while marks of a knife were discovered on either side of the suit case. As yet, police have been unable to solve the mystery surrounding the ownership of the satchel.

William J. Russell, aged 70, a Civil war veteran, who was arrested last night on East Market street for attempting to sell an overcoat believed to have been stolen, was released by Mayor Robb when arraigned in police court this morning. Russell claimed to have purchased the coat for three drinks of whiskey from a man in an East Market street saloon. He had made an offer to sell it for a dollar when he was taken in tow by two officers summoned to the Parks livery barn where he was trying to dispose of the coat. He said the man to whom he had given the whiskey for the coat had taken it from a Curtis delivery wagon. When he told the mayor he was penniless and without a home, he was given a chance to seek a place where he could be cared for being released and the coat held at the police station for the unknown owner.
