Boy on Roller Skates Fatally Hurt by Truck

Thomas Francis Daley Jr., nine-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. T.F. Daley,
404 S. Metcalf-st., died of a fractured skull Friday evening at St.
Rita's hospital.  he was injured near his home at 5:30 p.m. when he
roller-skated against the side of a truck trailer.  An iron brace on
the trailer struck the boy on the left side of the head.
The driver of the truck, Max Martin, of Detroit, an employe of the
Contract Cartage Co., of that city, saw, in the rear vision mirror,
the boy lying in the street.  he stopped the truck and hrried back to
the injured boy.  He was taken to the hospital immediately, but died
without recovering consciousness.
The truck driver reported the accident at police headquarters and was
permitted to continue to Detroit.
Prior to the accident, Thomas, Jr., had been roller-skating with
playmates on the sidewalk on the east side of Metcalf-st, opposite his
home.  At dinner time he and his sister, Peggy Ann, started to return home,
rolling down an inclined driveway to the street.  While on the driveway, the
boy saw a truck approachng from the south and called a warning to his
sister.  he slipped, however, on the roller skates and went against the side
of the trailer.
Thomas Jr., was born in Lima and had attended school here.  he had
recently recovered from an illness contracted six weeks ago.
In addition to his parents and sister, he leaves his grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Gillham, of S. Metcalf-st.
Requiem high mass will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Gerard's
Catholic church.  Burial will be in Gethsemene cemetery.
