KINGSVILLE — Joseph Harvey Berry, age 95,
of Creek Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at the Ashtabula County
Medical Center.
Born Jan. 30, 1912, in Stoneboro, Pa., he was a son of the late
William Joseph and Mary Ellen (Harvey) Berry and had been an area
resident most of his life. A graduate of the Ohio State University, he
was a Golden Gloves boxer during the 1930’s.
Prior to his retirement, he worked as a landscape architect for the
Ohio Department of Transpor tation, and he previously owned Berry
Landscape Company and Ashtabula Construction Company.
A member of St. Joseph Church and the B.P.O. Elks #208, Mr. Berry’s
favorite pastime was visiting with family and friends. An avid
horseman, he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and traveling with
his wife.
Survivors include three children, Beth (John) Daugherty of Stow, Mary
(Thomas) Rose of Kingsville, and Philip (Jo Merkle) Berry of Athens;
five grandchildren, Justin, Erin, Michael, Laura and Nicholas; and
several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 53 years,
Bernice (Riethman) Berry, on Feb. 5, 2005; his grandson, Jeremy Berry;
one brother, Charles E. Berry; and his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, at
St. Joseph Church, 3330 Lake Ave., Ashta bula, Ohio, with the Rev.
Philip Miller, Pas tor, presiding. Inurn ment will be at St. Joseph
Cemetery.
Calling Hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at the
Zaback-Ducro Funeral Home, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ash ta bula, Ohio.

Norwalk — Shirley J. Hager, age 81, of
Norwalk, Ohio, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, at Gaymont Nursing
Center.
Born June 27, 1926, in Conneaut, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late
Roy N. and Margaret Ann (Heimer) Smith. She attended St. Mary School’s
in Conneaut and came to this area 20 years ago.
She attended St. Paul Catholic Church and was a life member of the
V.F.W. Post #2743 Auxiliary and Eagles Aerie #711 Auxiliary. She
enjoyed Wednesday night Norwalk Booster bingo, collecting elephants
and angels and loved spending time with her friends and family.
Survivors include her son, Michael W. (Sharen) Hager of Corona,
Calif.; her daughters, Joan M. (Jeff) DuFore of Port Clinton, Ohio and
Clarice Jean (Dale) Foster of Norwalk, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and
12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hager, in 1987; her
brother, Lawrence Smith; and sisters, Kathryn Allds and Marian Zehner.
Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at Walker
Funeral Home, 98 West Main St. Norwalk, Ohio.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, at
St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 E. Main St. Norwalk, Ohio with father
David Cirata officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery.

N. KINGSVILLE — Barty Elvine Jackson, age
81, of Dibble Road, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, at UH- Conneaut
Medical Center.
Born July 8, 1926, in Ivanhoe, Va., she was a daughter of the late
Erty Ellis and Sarah Victoria Dalton.
Barty retired from Ashtabula Skyway Drive-In Theatre, where she
managed the concessions stand for 21 years. She enjoyed crafts,
quilting, shrimp dinners, collecting knick knack’s, bowling and her
grandkids.
Survivors include five children, David A. Jackson, Jr. of Austinburg,
Beulah (Charlie) Plats of N. Kingsville, Wanda (Charles) Phelps of
Mansfield, Ohio, Raymond (Tammy) Jackson of Kingsville and Robert
(Barb) Jackson of Conneaut; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Barty was preceded in death by her
ex-husband, David A. Jackson Sr.; son, Ralph E. Jackson; siblings,
Aaron Dalton, Beulah “Goldie” Dalton, Ellis C. Dalton, LuRethie O.
Gegan, Garland Dalton, Gladys M. Jackson, Virgil W. Dalton, Ollie G.
Dalton and Charlie A. Dalton.
A Service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at the Ducro
Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, with the
Rev. Kenneth Roberts, pastor of the Pentecostal Church of God,
officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
Calling Hours will be held two hours prior to the Service from 12:30
to 2:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

CONNEAUT — Robert George Graf, Sr., age
84, of Conneaut, Ohio, passed away Thursday afternoon, Aug. 23, 2007,
at Ashtabula Co. Medical Center, following a brief illness.
Born Dec. 8, 1922, in Burbank, Ohio, he was a son of Franklin and
Florence (Markel) Graf. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Force during
W.W.II and was shot down in the Sea of Japan. Bob married his wife of
60 years, Esther Hetrick Graf, on July 3, 1947.
He retired in 1982, from the East Ohio Gas Company, after working
there for 38 years.
He was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Conneaut, where
he served in leadership roles as Deacon, Church Moderator, sang in the
choir and served on numerous committees. He was a very active member
of the International Order of Odd Fellows holding offices locally,
statewide and nationally. He was on the Board of Directors for the Odd
Fellows Home in Springfield, Ohio and most recently, as a member of
the Uniform Branch with the IOOF, held the position of General
Commander of the World, as a four star General. For many years, he was
a member of the Odd Fellows Honor Guard, which stood guard at the Tomb
of the Unknown Soldier and was also a member of the Salem Rebekah’s
#385.
Bob was a Past Commander of the American Legion Cowle Post #151, and
was a Republican Committeeman. He served as a Conneaut City Councilman
and continued to spend most Monday evenings attending Council
meetings. He was an active member of the Conneaut Rotary Club and was
a charter member of Conneaut Optimist Club. He also served on the
Conneaut Public Library board, the Conneaut Recreation Boar, was a
Trustee at Conneaut Fire Station #3 and was also a long time member of
the Ashtabula County Town Choir.
Among his varied activities, he traveled to California for three years
to assist in the building of the Odd Fellows float for the Rose Bowl
Parade.
Bob was instrumental in many local projects, including the
construction of the boardwalk at Conneaut Township Park beach. He and
Leonard Dello were key persons in building the war memorial at
Conneaut City Hall and he also enjoyed helping to restore Ashtabula
County covered bridges.
His many hobbies included golfing, bowling in numerous leagues and
crocheting. He made golf club covers, sweater vests, slippers and
stocking caps, which he enjoyed giving away and always carried dog
treats in his car to give out.
Survivors include his wife, Esther; six children, Donita (Wendell)
Jensen of Findlay, Ohio, Roberta Lou Brammer of Canton, Ohio, Rebecca
(Philip) Smith of Richmond, Va., Robert (Cyndi) Graf II of N.
Kingsville, Ohio, Tena (George) Robotham and Ronald (Barbara) Graf,
both of Elgin, Ill.; a sister, Betty Hartshorne of Wadsworth, Ohio; a
brother, Raymond (Corrine) Graf of Wooster, Ohio; 20 grandchildren; 27
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold Graf; and
a granddaughter, Glenna Brammer.
Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, at the First
Baptist Church, 370 State St., Conneaut, with the Rev. Jonathan
Singer, pastor of the church, and Bob’s grandson, the Rev. Peter C.
Smith, pastor of Blackstone Presbyterian Church in Blackstone, Va.,
officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, N.
Kingsville, Ohio.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday Aug.,
26, 2007, at the Marcy Funeral Home, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio.
The Odd Fellows will conduct a Memorial Service at 7:30 PM.
Additional time will be at the Church from 10 a.m. until the time of
Service, Monday, Aug. 27, 2007.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the Memorial
Fund of First Baptist Church, Hospice of the Western Reserve, or to

MIDDLEFIELD — Clarence J. “CJ” Ohl, age
76, a resident of Middlefield, Ohio, passed away Saturday evening,
August 25, 2007, at UHHS Geauga Regional Hospital, Claridon Township.
Born Sept. 11, 1930, in Chardon, Ohio, he was the son of the late
Clarence and Hazel (Phillips) Ohl and was a lifelong area resident. He
was a graduate of Middlefield High School in 1948. On April 20, 1957,
he married Stella Majka in Middlefield and they had just celebrated 50
years of marriage.
In his earlier years, he worked at Russell Funeral Service. CJ also
worked as a foreman at Kingsbury Asphalt Company and retired from
Ronyak Paving in 1996.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Middlefield for
60+ years; a member of the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department since
1948; and a life member of VFW Post #9678 in Middlefield. He enjoyed
camping.
Survivors include his wife, Stella; three daughters, Judith (Richard)
Cook of Middlefield, and Cynthia (William) Hull and Kathy (Joseph)
Mayoros, both of Troy Township; grandchildren, Jason (Kelly) Cook and
Matthew (Stacy) Cook, Chrissy, Stacey and Kailey Hull, and Jennifer
and Ryan Mayoros; and two great-grandchildren, Ashleigh and Zachary
Cook.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Christopher
Hull.
Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at the
RUSSELL GOLDEN RULE FUNERAL SERVICE, 15670 W. High St., (Rt. 87),
Middlefield, with Pastor Edward Peterson, of the First United
Methodist Church, 14999 S. State Ave., Middlefield, officiating.
Burial will be in Middlefield Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 28, 2007, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the

MENTOR — Betty R. Warner, age 82, of
Mentor Hills Drive, Mentor, Ohio, died early Friday morning, August
24, 2007, at Kemper House where she had been a resident the past three
months.
She was born Oct. 3, 1924, in Rock Creek, the daughter of Ollie and
Myrtle (Ludy) Myers and has been a resident of Mentor since 1976,
previously living in Orwell. Betty was married to Hugh E. Warner on
May 23, 1942, in Maysville, Ky.
She was a member of the Orwell United Methodist Church and enjoyed
camping and traveling.
Survivors include a son, Larry H. (Carol) Warner of Branson West, Mo.;
a daughter, Linda L. (Robert) Deimling of Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio;
grandchildren, Kimberly Becker of Salt Lake City, Utah, Krista Ivey of
Phoenix, Ariz., Randy Deimling of Irving, Tex., and Beth Newbauer of
Columbus, Ohio; and two great-grandchildren, Graham and Hunter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hugh in 1997; a
brother, Bryson O. Myers; and three sisters, Crystal Wengstrom,
Bernice Reed, and Evelyn Ritter.
Funeral Services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at
the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, INC.,
49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Meredith Coleman, of the
Jefferson United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in
Brownville Cemetery.

MIDDLEFIELD — Therese “Terri” Mares, age
45, a resident of Middlefield, Ohio, passed away early Monday morning,
August 27, 2007, at University Hospital Case Medical Center in
Cleveland.
Born July 31, 1962, in Cleveland, she was a daughter of Jaro S. and
Dolly (Kall) Mares and was a lifelong area resident. She was a
graduate of Berkshire High School in Burton, Class of 1980.
A Sales Clerk, she was employed by Watson Furniture in Middlefield for
11 years.
An avid Browns Fan, she loved being with her nieces, nephews and
family.
Survivors include her parents, Jaro and Dolly; a son, James Macauley
of Middlefield; two daughters, Ashley Macauley of Middlefield and
Krystal Lear of Eastlake; two brothers, Jaro A. (Shannon) Mares of
Middlefield and Paul M. (Becky) Mares of Mesopotamia; two sisters,
Cheryl Ann Rimel of Orwell and Peggy Mares of Middlefield; and several
nephews and nieces.
Funeral Service will be 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2007, at
RUSSELL FUNERAL SERVICE, 15670 W. High St., (Rt. 87), Middlefield,
Ohio.
Visitation will be Thursday from 12 p.m., Noon, to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

CONNEAUT — Harold J. “Mike” Richards, age
81, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Saturday morning, August 25, 2007, at
Inn-Conneaut Health Center.
Born April 25, 1926, in Ashtabula, Ohio, he was the son of Miles J.
and Lempi V. (Hakkarainen) Richards. A lifelong area resident, he was
a Veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving during World War II.
Mr. Richards retired in 1991 after 30 years of service at Foseco
Metallurgical in Conneaut.
He was a member of East Conneaut United Methodist Church, where he was
an usher. He enjoyed all sports, especially baseball at any level,
playing horseshoes, fixing things, and gardening. He loved singing
crazy nursery rhymes to the grandchildren and spending time with his
family.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred “Millie” (Kultti) Richards, with
whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage on July 5; his daughter, Kathy
Pierce of Concord Township, Ohio; two sons, Tim (Marcia) Richards of
Brecksville, Ohio, and Tom Richards of Conneaut; five grandchildren,
Marissa, Allison, and Kyle Richards, Kaari (Matt) Schroeder, and
Robert Pierce; his sister, Dorothy Hill of Madison, Ohio; and his
brother, George Richards of Conneaut, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ruth Albee; and
three brothers, Marvin, Roy, and Harry Richards.
Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 28, 2007, at the
Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut,
Ohio, with the Rev. Paula Marbury, pastor of East Conneaut United
Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory
Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio, will Full Military Honors.
Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Monday, August 27, 2007, from
2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
