PANSY MAE SECREST

Pansy Mae Secrest, 70, of Simmons Road, Frankfort, died of 6:00 AM Sunday, May 20, 1990, at her residence. She was born April 9, 1920 in Urbana, Ohio Elmer and Rosa Statin Evans. On May 10, 1938, she married Earl Secrest, who died July 19, 1965. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Maxine) Newman, Mrs. Mac (Janet) Lambert, Mrs. Bo of (Doris) Phillips, Columbus and Mrs. Juanita Dexter, Logan, Ohio. She was predeceased by one daughter, Hazel Estep; two brothers, Ralph and Carl Evans; and one sister, Helen Patrick. Mrs. Secrest was a retired nursing assistant for the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Chillicothe. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM in the Fisher–Anderson- Ebright Funeral Home, Frankfort, with Rev.Elza Goodman officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Frankfort. Friends may call 5 to 9 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

Julie Minot VanGinkel Overton
The Ohio Genealogical Society is saddened lo report the death of Julie Minot VanGinkel Overton on July 28, 1997. Julie has been prominent in The Ohio Genealogical Society which she led as president from 1984-1988 During that time she accomplished three major projects: revision of the OGS Constitution, development of the OGS Leadership Conference, and rotation of the OGS Annual Convention to locations in various parts of the state She served on many committees including Chair of the Convention. Nominations and Elections, and Speakers Bureau In 1982 she was awarded the honor of a Fellow of OGS
Julie was a founding member of the Greene County Chapter OGS in 1980. She was also a member of The Society of Ohio Archivists, which awarded her their Merit of Achievement Award in September. 1996, for her state-wide efforts in promoting archival awareness.
She recently retired from the Greene County Public Library, where she was coordinator of the Local History Room for 16 years. Julie was instrumental in its growth into a resource used by an average of 600 persons per month.
Born in New York to Korstiaan and Janet Griwold VanGinkel, she received a BA from Antioch College in 1962 and a MA in History/Archives from Wright State
University in 1979. She is survived by her mother, Janet, her husband, Ralph Overton, whom she married June 17, 1960, children, Leslie, Archie and Holly, two grand-daughters and a grandson (born June 25, 1997) She is survived by many friends and colleagues and will be missed by all those who knew her

John Edwin Logan

John Edwin Logan, 96, longtime resident of Champaign County, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 1997, in Horscheads, N.Y. He lived all his life in Urbana and Urbana Twp. before going to Elmira, NY, about two years ago to live close to his daughter. Ellen L. Martin of Horseheads
He was bom Sept 10. 1900 a son of Ethelbert Rohrer and Annettie (Bailey) Logan. He is survived by his daughter Ellen L. Martin, son-in-law. Archer N Martin and four grandchildren.

Ralph Lamar Phares
Ralph Lamar Phares 76, of South Vienna, OH, died September 10, 1997 in Community Hospital. Springfield He was bom March 6, 1921, in Springfield OH, the son of Herbert Ralston and Margaretha Jane (Smith) Phares He retired from Navistar after 20 years service and was a retired Fire Chief of South Vienna Fire Department Survivors include his wife whom he married January 6, 1942, Rose Jeannctte (McCulla) Phares, eight children and their spouses, two sisters, two brothers, 26 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren.

DARLING, I. S. MRS.

Mrs. I. S. darling, one of Mechanicsburg’s oldest and most respected citizens, crossed the silent river at six o’clock yesterday morning, after a lingering illness aged about seventy-two years. The funeral will be held at the late home on West Sandusky street , at two o’clock tomorrow (Friday) afternoon, Rev. Leclar of the M.P. church, officiating. Interment at Maple Grove Cemetery . DARNELL, JAMES

Death of a pioneer occurred on Thursday, May 24, 1877, at his residence in Jackson township, after an illness of twenty four hours, Mr. James Darnell, one of the most widely known and highly esteemed citizens of our county.

Mr. Darnell was born to use his own words, in a canebrake, where the town of Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County, Kentucky, now stands in 1795, and came to Ohio with his father’s family in 1810 and settled in Jackson township, where he has resided ever since. He claims to have cut the first tree ever cut by a white man in Jackson township. He was one of the solid men of the times, and his familiar face and happy speeches will be sadly missed at our pioneer meetings, where he was a regular attendant. FURROW, ETTA

The many friends of Mrs. Etta Furrow in this vicinity mourn her death in early life. Her grandfather, the late Robt. Mcfarland, has had grandchildren for more than fifty years, and this is the first death among them of mature age. (News from Concord Township, May 24, 1877)

HALL, JOHN REV.

Rev. John Hall, the father of Flemmon Hall, Esq., and one of the pioneer settlers of the county, having come to Ohio from Virginia in 1817 died. Mr. Hall was a useful man for more than half a century, and has now been called to his reward, at the age of fourscore years. His funeral service was preached at Neer chapel on Thursday last, by Rev. Daivd Warnock. (News from Concord Township, May 24, 1877)

KITE, WILLIAM MRS.

Death has again visited the west end and removed Mrs. Wm. Kite of Millerstown, a very excellent woman, aged about 26 years. (News from Concord Township, July 5, 1877)

OWEN, JONATHAN MRS.

ZIMMERMAN, ISAAC

Death is still doing its work in the west end the last victim being that of Mr. Isaac Zimmerman, of the vicinity of Wiant’s mill. Mr. Zimmerman was of German descent, and was born in the vicinity where he died. He was an honest, industrious man and had accumulated considerable property, both real and personal. He was twice married and leaves a family of eight children. (News from Concord Township, June 28, 1877)
