Hildebrandt Gets Purple Heart for His Navy Service
Wilson Hildebrandt, U.S. navy, has been awarded the Order of the Purple Heart for meritorious service in active duty, it was learned through his family in Berlin Heights. Hildebrandt has been in seven navel battles in the South Pacific area, participated in the African invasion and was on convoy duty.  He was on two destroyers which were sunk.  One went down at Guadalcanal, and he spent five weeks there trying to get transportation back to the United States, according to his sister, Mrs. Lewis Green. He finally booked passage as far as Esperitos Santos, where he stayed for five months.  While there, he flew as tail gunner on a B-17, and was credited with four Jap Zeros.  He has been wounded in action and spent some time in a hospital.  He also has been hit by machine gun fire.
