Gallia, Ohio
Obituaries

Plain Dealer, The (Cleveland, OH) - January 3, 1997

Deceased Name: CHARLES MOSSMAN, 93, FORMER TEACHER
Charles William Mossman kept going to school virtually all of his life. Throughout his 60-year classroom teaching career, he missed only 14 days on the job while he continued to accumulate academic hours.

Mr. Mossman chaired the commercial department at Olmsted Falls High School and was certified to teach social science courses, Spanish, English and journalism. He also had a degree in chiropody and a chiropractor's license.

Mr. Mossman, 93, had a heart attack Christmas Day at his home in Olmsted Township. He died Sunday at Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights.

He was born in Bidwell, Ohio, in Gallia County. He graduated from high school in 1922 and received a bachelor's degree from Rio Grande College four years later. He earned a master's degree at Ohio State University and studied at the University of Cincinnati and Western Reserve University.

He taught in seven counties in Ohio and did substitute teaching in three others. During the early 1940s, he had lived in Spencerville, Ohio, and graduated from the O'Neil-Ross chiropractic college. He studied law for three years and took courses in mechano-therapy and massage.

Mr. Mossman was offered the principalship at Griswold School, a proprietary school in Cleveland, but he decided to teach in Olmsted Falls. He also taught night classes in Parma and, after he retired, he taught at Polaris Vocational School in Middleburg Heights.

He wanted to ensure the safe deliveries of his eight children, so he handled seven of the births himself. Because buying milk for them was a major expense, he learned to milk goats and kept 10 at a dairy farm in Berea. He was a member of the Ohio Milk-goat Breeders Association and served as state editor of the national publication for the organization. He also raised vegetables on his spacious property.

When his home was badly burned in a fire in 1958, he could not get a loan to have it repaired for almost a year because he was in his late 50s and lenders said his life expectancy was too short to pay back a 20-year note.

Mr. Mossman had many hobbies, taking courses in photojournalism and mastering both sophisticated and primitive musical instruments. Adept on the violin and on the hand saw, he made a violin in retirement.

He enjoyed dining at Bob Evans restaurants because he had been a close friend of Evans' father when the restaurateur was a child.

He attended Fields United Methodist Church in North Ridgeville and studied the Bible daily. He had read it more than 30 times and the Koran twice.

A son, Jomorris S., is deceased.

Mr. Mossman is survived by his wife, the former Esther Ellen Long; sons, John W. of San Bernardino, Calif.; Carlyle of Maumee, Ohio, and Paul I. of Florida; daughters, Rosellen Kulisek of Liberty, Texas, R. Charlene Rogers of Parma, Margaret A. Skinner of Columbus and Carol R. Andrews of Avon Lake; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Fields United Methodist Church, 34077 Lorain Rd., North Ridgeville.

Arrangements are being handled by Baker Funeral Home of Berea.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
