Cincinnati was originally known as
Losantiville. It was first settled about 1788 by settlers traveling down
the Ohio River. It's present name comes from the Society of Cincinnati to which
some of the founders belonged. It has been known as the "American Rome" because
it is, like Rome, built on seven hills and a river, and also because of its
early strong Roman Catholic influence.
