Crime News

In the Common Pleas Court, in Cadiz, Ohio, Thomas Dowden, a negro, was put on trial the other day for the seduction, under promise of marriage, of a miserable white wretch, named Lydia M. Ames. Just as Sherriff McPeck adjourned Court for dinner, the girl, in presence of Judge and jury, rushed upon the prisoner with a loaded revolver, and was prevented from bringing the trial to a tragic close by the prompt interference of the Sheriff and others. The attempt upon the life of the negro seemed to be a prearranged affair. Considerable excitement prevailed during the trial, but no further demonstrations were made. The jury were out two hours, and returned a verdict of not guilty.
