Civil War

The two pictures above are of M. A. Garrett, 92 year-old-resident of Highland county. The lower picture was taken just before Mr. Garrett left his home as a soldier in the Union army during the Civil War. He was 17 years of age at that time. The other picture was taken several days ago. Mr. Garrett is one of the three surviving Civil War veterans in this county and is apparently in good health and extremely active for his years. He was born March 27, 1847. Seventy five years ago he served as a corporal in the 175th regiment. Company A. He took part in the Battle of Franklin in which 12,000 were killed. Today Mr. Garrett mounts his riding horse from the ground and rides about his large farm near Belfast making tours of inspection. He has seven children all living: Dr. John Garrett and Burch Garrett of Indianapolis; Mrs. Archie Beam, Cincinnati; Mrs. Fred Kaufman of Washington, C. H.; Ove Garrett, Chillicothe; Homer Garrett of Cincinnati; and Ed Garrett of near Belfast; 16 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Garrett died three years ago.
