IN MEMORY OF W .A. BURRIS
W. A. Burris was born at Jackson, Ohio, April 23rd, 1838, and passed to rest at his home southwest of Bethany, Missouri near Shiloh school house, Sept 23rd, 1916; aged 78 years, 5 months. He was married to Ann Hildebrand at Jackson, Ohio Dec. 26th, 1861.
This was his second marriage. His first wife and child died in Ohio.
He was married for 55 years to the wife who survives him and lived 51 years on the farm where he settled and where he died. One son Eld C. A. Burris and one daughter, Mrs. Rose E. Dotson, are living. Three children are buried in the Burris cemetery near Mitchelville church, where he himself is laid away to rest. Eight grandchildren survive him. His family, except one grand son C M Burris of Bartelsville, Oklahoma and one granddaughter Mrs. Velma Wixon, Potwine, Kansas, were with him during his illness.
He knew the passing was near and said that he was ready for the change. He passed away peacefully and is at rest. Dedicated to God by his parents early in life in baptism, he claimed faith in Him at the last, with a clear, definite confession. He was a good true husband, a kind, indulgent father and a good neighbor, and was strictly honest in all of his dealings.
His funeral was held at Mitchelville church Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock Sept 24th in the presence of a large number of his friends and neighbors. Rev. L. Layman of Bethany preached the sermon from Isa 28:19, "Thy dead shall live." Burial was in the Burris cemetery, near the church. Thus passed a pioneer citizen to whom we owe a debt of gratitude. May God bless his loved ones.
