George Clifford Callahan

CLIFF CALLAHAN DIES THURSDAY
----------
Prominent Resident of Wellston is Claimed

George Clifford Callahan, 70, one of Wellston's most prominent residents, business executive and church lay worker, died suddenly at his home there at 9:15 a.m. Thursday. Mr. Callahan, executive of the Morrow Manufacturing company at Wellston and former Jackson resident was widely known throughout the county.

Mr. Callahan had worked as usual on Wednesday and fell dead of a sudden heart attack. He had not been previously ill.

Born on a Liberty township farm, he was a son of William and Sarah Gilliand Callahan. He worked at the Chapman Coal company mine and later was manager of the company's store until it closed in 1916, when he became associated with the Jackson Mill and Lumber company, leaving that firm in 1919 to go with the Wellston manuifacturing firm.

In October of 1908 he married Miss Jennie Morrow of Wellston who suravives [sic] and they lived in Jackson until moving their residence to Wellston in 1922.

While maintaining a residence in Jackson, he was an elder in the First Presbyterian church here and continued his church work at the Wellston Presbyterian church, where he was elder, clerk of the session and superintendent of the Sunday School for 13 years. In district church work, he was treasurer of National Missions of the Portsmouth district Presbytery [sic]. Just a few weeks ago he had attended as a delegate at the Ohio Synod of the Presbyterian church at Wooster.

In addition to Mrs. Callahan, he leaves one son, Charles Callahan, an associate professor in the law school at Ohio State university. He also leaves one brother W. G. Callahan of Portsmouth. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Louisa, who died in 1922 at the age of eight; a brother S. O. H. Callahan and a sister Mrs. Robert Rice, both of whom were Jackson residents at the time of their deaths.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday from the home with the Rev. S. Whilding officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount cemetery here under the direction of Gaskill and King of Wellston.
