MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS
From
Old and New Cemeteries, Licking County

(Submitted & Transcribed by Linda Dietz)

Note—The land occupied by the Old Cemetery was originally owned by Major William Robertson who laid out the village (1815) and named it Wilmington. The burial lot is an irregular triangle lying between the Mt. Vernon road on the east and the steep embankment protecting it from the North Fork of Licking River and the low overflowed strip to the north and west, and Mrs. Phillips (now) property on the south line. It could not be enlarged and the lots were rapidly rilling. Across North Fork about one mile south in a high broad field just off from the Homer road and on the " Banner Williams road," was the burying ground of the family by that name and the Conards. This place could and was recently enlarged and is termed the New Cemetery. More than twice the number of adults are buried there than have markers in the old quarter.
