Death of Edward P. French
Edward P. French for many years a resident of this city, died
at his home on West Avenue, during the early hours of Friday morning, in the
74th year of his age. He had been confined to his room not more than three days
and his death was unexpected by his friends. Early in the week the deceased had
been about as usual and had enjoyed a little fishing trip, a spot of which he
was very found. Death was due to heart trouble.
Edward P. French was born in England in 1842 and when three
years of age, his parents came to America, settling on the Middle ridge near
Amherst. in the late '50's the family moved to Elyria and the father, Thomas
French, established the jewelry business, which is now in the hands of the
Haserodt Bros. For many year the firm of French and Son was the leading one on
its line of business. the father retiring from the firm, the business was
carried on by the son together with E.E. Fisher. Disposing of his interest to
his partner, Mr. French then entered into the furniture business in Cleveland
from which he retired a number of years ago.
The deceased was a Civil War veteran, enlisting in Co. H.,
103rd O.V.I. in 1862 for three years. His discharge followed five months later
because of disability. At first sergeant, he re-enlisted in 1864, and was
mustered out Sept. 1st, of the same year at the expiration of the term of
service. Mr. French was secretary of the 103rd Regiment organization at the time
of his death, as well as holding a similar office with Co. K. 135th Regiment.
Mr. French was twice married, his first wife being Miss
Lenora Leonard of Detroit. her death occurring in 1909, he was married to Mrs.
Minnie Dailey May 24th, 1911, who, with her two sons, Messrs. Ralph and Edison
Daily, of Elyria and one daughter, Mrs. J.W. Huntoon of Akron, survives him. The
deceased also leaves one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Tuttle, of this city.
The funeral services were held from the late home of the
deceased on West Avenue at two o'clock Monday afternoon, Rev. J.H. Grant and
Rev. J.T. Hoak officiating. At the grave the exercises were conducted by the
G.A.R. At the services were present five members of the company in which
deceased first enlisted. The pall bearers were chose from the members of the
Elyria Fly Casting Club of which the deceased had been president since its
organization in 1909. They were Dr. P.E. Maddock, Clark maddock, C.E. Blanchard,
H.K. Day, Geo. Roberts and R.F. Mussey. The Elyria Democrat,
