Remarks: His Certificate of Disability states that he was unfit for duty for 25 days out of the last two months. He was discharged for "a chronic Rheumatic affection. From this he suffered before his enlistment. The exposure of camp life has brought on a return which persists, as there is little probability of his being fit for duty under present circumstances, I recommend his discharge." Also listed on that Certificate is his place of birth "Maumee City, Ohio."

"Steve Jerome has got a discharge to go home. He had to give up all his government clothes but gets pay for the time that he has been here which is nearly two months. He is very poor, nothing but skin and bones."...Merrell's Diary(1-14,15)..Nov. 26, 1861

There are a number of Alzina's letters in Hayden-Jerome Family Papers, 1880-2001, Ms. Collection 774. Kansas State Historical Society, Topeka, Kansas.
