A FIENDISH MURDER.
Summit and Medina Counties Horrified by One of the Worst Crimes Imaginable.  An Aged and Wealthy Framer Murdered for Money.  Murderer Crookedly Confesses.  Twice Taken to the Scene of Murder.  Part of His Story Doubted.  Full Details.  ….  Ed. Johnson, Self-Confessed Murderer of Oscar Osborn. …..

A horror, so brutal and so revolting as to shock the whole community of western Summit and eastern Medina counties, took place in the south-west part of Richfield township last Friday evening.  An old man of 80 years, inoffensive and weak, living alone, while about his evening chores, was seized by a murderous ruffian, and after being strangled and choked, was thrown into a manger and his head beaten to a jelly.  ….
Tuesday afternoon Ed. Johnson, a farm hand, who had once worked for Osborn, confessed the crime….
Oscar Osborn was an old and respected citizen of Summit county, living in the south-west part of Richfield township about half a mile from the Medina county line.  Over 100 acres of his farm in this county.  He was rich, having amassed property by extreme frugality, but a man of his word, hard-working, and one who did and spoke no evil of his neighbors.  He would have been 80 years of age next month, but was hale and hearty.  Sunday afternoon, about 4 o’clock, he was found dead in his barn, having been most foully murdered. ….
The house is situated on the west side of the road.  It is a neat frame house of two stories, painted white with red blinds, and has many shade trees about it.  The barn in question, an old style 30 x 40, stands directly west of the house perhaps about ten rods, fronting to the east ….
In his trousers’ pocket were $4.66 in a money bag, his knife and his house keys which he always carried with him.  But missing was a bill purse, which it was known contained a roll of bills of a good many dollars, perhaps 50 or 100. ….
The time of the murder was probably just at evening Friday. …
Mr. Osborn was known to have been wealthy, owning 240 acres of land and having ready money, and it was quite generally believed that he had a large sum of money secreted some where.
Mr. Osborn had been warned by his neighbors that he should not live alone and that robber might be attempted.  Once in reply he had said: “What if they do come; they’ll have to find it.”  This would look as if he did have hidden money.  Once after being warned, he made a large deposit at an Akron bank.  And it has developed that he had been once robbed before in August 1897.  His son-in-law found among his papers Monday a memorandum made by J.H. Wright, the president of the First national Bank in Akron, showing that $1890 in bank certificates had been “stolen or lost” as stated to the bank officials by Mrs. Osborn….
Ed. Johnson, a farm hand … worked about two miles from Osborn … he was the last person seen with Osborn ... had paid out considerable money in the city Friday evening …he  hired a rig… to go out to Richfield to get some money, as he said from his employer.  It was also learned that he had not obtained any money from his employer, but had gotten money from some source, with which he paid his debts. …Johnson confessed…saw his sweetheart, whom he had taken with him to see his victim at the Osborn house Sunday afternoon….
Since July of last year, “Uncle Oscar” had lived alone, preferring this mode of life to any other.  Previous to this time he, with a weak minded son, had lived here alone; but the son, Jesse, died a year ago last July from sun stroke.  Mrs. Osborn had been dead 13 years.
Mr. Osborn was a very sociable man and greatly enjoyed having his neighbors call and chat with him.  He was honest but penurious and money-loving.  Next October 23 the neighbors would have celebrated his 80th. birthday.
Mrs. E.R. Brower of West Richfield is the only remaining child.  A brother, A.G. Osborn, lived about 40 rods south of Oscar Osborn’s home …..

At Medina, Ohio,  Aug. 18th, Mrs. Frances, wife of Mr. Wm. Loree, and daughter of Colonel Josiah Butler, of this town, aged 36. Possessed of an amiable disposition, modest and unassuming in her intercourse with others, charitable towards the faults of others, with a heart early impressed, and we trust sanctified by the  religion of Christ, Mrs. Loree did not fail to draw around her a large circle of endeared friends, who will sincerely sympathise with the afflicted parents of the deceased, and their family, in the severe loss they have sustained in her death. They will be happy to learn, that though called to leave an affectionate husband, and an interesting family, she was sustained in her last hours, by the power of the Gospel, and was enabled in faith and hope to say " not my will but thine be done."---- Com.
