Perry County

Founded on December 26, 1817, Perry county was the 55th county to be formed in Ohio. Portions of Fairfield, Washington and Muskingum Counties were taken to create Perry County.  Its county seat is New Lexington.  Perry county was named for Oliver Hazard Perry, a hero of the War of 1812.

Another noted city in the county is Somerset, where the first Catholic church in the state was built in 1808.
