ELLEN ARLEDGE
Ellen J[eanette]., the 13-months-old daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. George Arledge,
passed away Monday evening at six o'clock at the home her parents on
Williamsport Rd. She had been sick with the measles for ten days, but her
condition was not considered serious, and her death comes as a great shock to
her parents, a brother, and two sisters. The funeral will be held
on Thursday, but the arrangements have not yet been completed.

George D. Arledge, 83, of 454 N. High St., died Tuesday at 1:30 pm at
the Ross County Medical Center Hospital after an extended illness. His funeral
will Friday at 1 pm at the Ware Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Hitler-Ludwig
Cemetery in Pickaway County. Calling hours at the funeral home are after
5 pm Thursday. He was born Dec. 4, 1896, in Pickaway County to Daniel and Belle
Thompson Arledge. He was married on Jan. 3, 1917, to
the former Oda O.
Shasteen, who survives. Also
surviving are two daughters, Mrs. C.L. (Viola) Bosworth of Chillicothe and Mrs. Paul (Blanche)
Bliss of Cattail Road; six grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren. He retired in 1941 as a salesman for the Borden Co.
and was a 50-year member of the Modern Woodmen.

Guy Arledge, Green Township farmer, passed away at
his home on Sunday, after an illness of five weeks due to Typhoid Fever. He was
born in Green
Township, Ross County, on Oct. 26, 1873, the son of William H. and Elizabeth
Huffman Arledge, and was a member of the Methodist
Church. His wife, formerly, Miss Anna Ginther,
one son, Richard of Chillicothe, four daughters Mrs. Nettie Dean of Chillicothe, Mrs. Edith Delong of Hallsville, Mrs. Tillie Haldren of Chillicothe, and Miss Jessie at home;
four
grandchildren; five brothers, Hershel, George, Luther, William, and Edward, all of
Kinnikinnick; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Stevenson
and Mrs. Ella
Stout, of Chillicothe; and his
father William
Arledge, of Kinnikinnick, survive.
Funeral services will be held at two pm Wednesday at the residence, Rev. Clifford officiating, and interment will be at the
Mt. Pleasant
Cemetery.

HENRY W. ARLEDGE
Henry W. Arledge, retired
farmer, Green Township, passed away at this home Friday Morning at 8:45 after an
illness of six weeks; due to the infirmities of old age. Mr. Arledge was born in Adelphi Oct. 12, 1832,
the son of Isaac and Polly Morrison Arledge. He was united in marriage with
Elizabeth Hoffman, with whom, with three children
preceded him to the grave. The following children survive, Hershel, Fannie, Mrs.
Catherine Stevenson, of
Kinnikinnick, Manuel, Chillicothe, William, Athens,
Luther,
Lima, George, Yellowbud, and Mrs. George Stout, of Green Township. He was member of
the Methodist Church, and funeral services will be held at Crouse Chapel Sunday
afternoon at 2:30 and the body will be laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

pm Tuesday in Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. He retired
in September 1970 after 19 and a half years of service with the Mead Corp.as a

Hospital following an extended illness. Born on Oct. 20, 1881 in Ross County, he
was the son of Thomas and Lydia Fellabaum Bennett. On Oct. 14, 1908 he was married to Mertice May
Waits who died on Oct. 1, 1963. Surviving are four
sons, Arthur H., Route 7, Robert a., San Diego, Calif., Leroy E., Washington
court House, and Earl E., route 3, three daughters, Mrs. Charles (Gladys) Joslyn, 503 E. Second St., Mrs. Carl (Margaret) Magill, route 5, and Mrs. Paul (Annabelle) Harris, 1518 N. Bridge St., 14 grandchildren and 19
great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Lilly May, eight brothers
and six sisters. Mr. Bennett, who retired in 1946 as
an employee of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, was believed to be the last of
the Erie and Ohio canal boat drivers. Pallbearers will be Larry Bennett, John and Michael Magill, Jams and William Josyln and Keith Cutright.

Cherokee Road died 7:21 pm Sept. 27, 1990 in Medical Center Hospital. She was
born March 14,
1921 in Higgins, PA to Willis N. and Louise Wisburn Bartlett. On January 8, 1943,
she married Leonard Bennett, who
survives. Also surviving are sons and daughters-in-laws, Terry L. and Kathy Bennett, Barry D. and Jeanne Bennett, all of
Kingston; four grandchildren, Jonathan, David, and Betsy Bennett, and Elizabeth Anne Williamson; sister, Jean Tarlton, Pottsville, PA; and two brothers, William Bartlett, Pottsville, PA and Walter Bartlett, Milford, DE. She was preceded in death
by son, Leonard Jr., and daughter, Carolyn Williamson Johnson,
a sister, Ida, and a brother, John. Mrs. Bennett was a member of MADD and Disabled American
Veteran Auxiliary. Funeral services will be held 2 pm Sunday at Haller Funeral
Home, with the Rev. Willard Shaffer officiating.

Bennett, 94, Yellowbud Road (Route 1) died at 1:40 pm
Wednesday at his residence after a brief illness. Funeral services for the
retired laborer will be held at 2 pm Saturday at the Springbank United Methodist

Bennett will officiate and bural will
follow in Springbank Cemetery. Friends may call Ware Funeral
Home after 4 pm Friday and on Saturday until noon; then at the church one hour
prior to the service. A native of Ross County, he was born Oct. 28, 1884, in
Deerfield Township to Jeremiah and Jeanette Hill Bennett. On Oct. 26, 1907, he
was married to the former Mary Etta Shasteen who died June 30,1966. Surviving
are seven sons. Albert, Frankfort; Willard and
Robert, Yellowbud; George, Williamsport Pike; Henry,
Chillicothe; Leonard, Cherokee Road, and Harold, Route 1,
Frankfort. Two daughters, Mrs. Herbert (Jeanette) Bennett, Chillicothe, and Mrs. Walter (Betty)
Crawford, Yellowbud Road; 50 grandchildren, 88
great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Claris Bennett, North High St. He was predeceased
by a daughter, a
brother and three sisters. He was a member of the Yellowbud United
Methodist Church and a 50 year member of Modern Woodmen of America, Camp 10323.

Claris Edward Bennett Sr., 95, of Yellowbud, went to be with his Lord February 16,
1998, at 1:00 pm in Valley View Manor Nursing Home, Frankfort, Ohio. He
was born January
3, 1903, in Yellowbud, Ohio, to Jerimaha and Clara Fox Bennett. On May 31, 1924, he
married Evelyn
(Easter) Bennett in Calvary Evangelical Church in
Circleville, Ohio. She preceded Claris in death on March 10, 1987. Claris is
survived by daughters, Jean E. Clark,
Columbus, and Ruth
E. Thompson, Kingston; sons and
daughters-in-law, John E. and Betty Bennett, Frankfort, and Claris Edward Jr.
and Patricia
Bennett, Kingston; 15 grandchildren; 28
great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Debra (Bennett) Park; two sons-in-law, Kenneth Clark and Dale Thompson; a brother, Jerimaha Bennett; a sister, Dorothy; two half-brothers; and
four half-sisters. Mr. Bennett, a
retired carpenter and electrician, was a lifetime member of Yellowbud United
Methodist Churh where he was Sunday School Superintendent, led the singing, and
was a delegate to the Methodist Conference for many years. He was also on the
building fund committee and help build the church parsonage. For 77 years, he
dedicated his life to building the kingdom for Christ's sake. The funeral will
be 11 am Thursday, February 19, 1998, at the Hill Funeral Home in Kingston, with
his grandson, Rev. Dan Bennett,
officiating. Burial will follow in Springbank Cemetery. Calling hours will be 2-9 pm
Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be
made through your local church to the Gideons or to Valley View Manor in
Frankfort, Ohio.

Mrs. Freda Bennett, 36, died unexpectedly in bed at 4:45 am Thursday of
a heart attack. Mrs. Bennett was born in
Scioto County on
May 4, 1918, and was married to Willard Bennett in 1939. They had lived in New
Holland about a year. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two
daughters, Mrs. Hazel Long of
Tipp City and Miss Virginia, at home; three sons, William, Donald and
Willard Jr., all at home; her father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Gaines; two half sisters, Mrs. Henry Bennett of Chillicothe and Mrs. Betty Prior of Tipp City; and a half brother,
Elmer Glenn of Florida. Service will be at 2 pm
Sunday at the Yellowbud EUB Church and interment will be in Springbank
Cemetery under direction of the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home, New Holland.

Miss Gusta Bennett, 34, died Thursday at her home at Denver, Ross County, her death resulting from a complication of diseases. James W., son of
Isaac N. and Mary
J. Bennett, was born Feb 25, 1871,
departed this life Sept. 27, 1913, aged 42 years, 7 months and 2
days. He was one of a family of nine children, five boys and four girls. Three brothers, a sister
and his father and mother have preceded him to the grave. Jim, as he was
commonly called, was a kind man and was never heard to speak an unkind word of
anyone. He was quiet in disposition and went about without offense to anyone. He
was fond of reading and enjoyed being alone.

Mrs. Jerry [Janet Hill]
Bennett, of Yellowbud, died at the hospital at Circleville yesterday,
where she had been taken to have an operation performed. She could not withstand
the shock of the operation and succumbed. To add to the sorrow and grief of the
husband and four
children, the six months' old child of the deceased mother died in the
afternoon, of cholera infantum, following its mother in about four hours.

DAV, NARFE Chapter 315, and the Ross County Committee for the Elderly. Funeral
services will be held 2 pm Friday at the Yellowbud United Methodist Church, with

the Chillicothe V.A. medical Center. He was an Army veteran of World War II,
where he served in North Africa, Anzio and Sicily campaigns. He was a member of
the Greenfield Bible Baptist Church, American Legion Post 62, V.F.W. Post 4736,
DAV, NARFE Chapter 315, and the Ross County Committee for the Elderly. Funeral
services will be held 2 pm Friday at the Yellowbud United Methodist Church, with
Rev. Ed Caskey officiating. Military
graveside services will follow in Springbank Cemetery. Calling hours will be 6-9 pm
Thursday at Haller Funeral Home and one hour prior to the funeral at the church
on Friday.

Mrs. Lydia Bennett of Yellowbud was born May 24, 1838 and
died October
3rd, at the age of 81 years, 4 months, and 9 days. She was ill three
weeks. Fifteen
children were born to Mrs. Bennett,
six of whom are living, viz., James, Jeremiah and Peter of Yellowbud, Charles of
Columbus, Alfred this city and Mrs. Whitten of Wayne Township. Funeral services
will be held Sunday at 10 am sun time at Spring Bank church and interment will
be made in Springbank Cemetery.

Miss Mary Eliza
Bennett, better known to her friends as Miss Minnie Bennett, died at one pm on Saturday, December 21
[1929]. She
was the daughter of Thomas Van Swearingen Bennett and Mary Crouse Bennett, and was born in this city, October 11, 1851.
Most of her life was spent at the old Crouse homestead near Kinnickinnick. She leaves to
mourn her loss, one brother, John Crouse Bennett, of Kinnickinnick, and two nieces,
Miss Florence Van
Swearingen Bennett and Mrs. Clark Rice. Funeral services will be held at the
home of her cousin, Miss Martha Bennett, at 10:30 Tuesday morning. Burial
will be in Grandview. The Rev. H.J. Buckingham, rector of St. Paul's church, of which
church Miss Bennett was communicant, will
be in charge the services.

died Thursday night in Chillicothe Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs.
Bennett was a member of the Yellowbud EUB
Church and an honorary member of the Modern Woodmen of America Camp 10323. She
was born July 14,
1887, in Ross county to Robert and Nancy Murphy Shasteen. On Oct. 29, 1907,
she was married to Charles D. Bennett, who survives. Also surviving are
two daughters, Mrs. Herbert (Jeanette) Norman of Carroll and Mrs. Betty Crawford of Route 1: seven sons, Albert and Harold

Ronald D Bennett,
58, retired
Navy, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, of Route 202, died Monday evening at Portsmouth
New Hampshire Regional Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born December 11, 1937, in
Lancaster, Ohio, a son of Albert and Marguertie Walston Bennett. He entered the Navy in 1955, and
retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1974. He was a member of the Seabees. In
1960, he spent a year in Antarctica. His tours included Guam, Cuba, Thailand,
Newfoundland, Rhode Island and Portsmouth, VA. He served two tours of duty in
Vietnam. After retiring from the Navy, he was employed as a pipefitter at the
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until 1993. He loved his family, gardening, fishing,
hunting, and reading. He is survived by his mother of Frankfort, Ohio; his wife of thirty
six years, Juanita
(Lytle) Bennett; three daughters, Mrs. Garth (Jeanne)
Adams, of Gray, Rhonda Bennett, Raymond and Jenna
Daniels, of E. Lebanon; a grandson,
Alexander Adams, of Gray; and two brothers, Paul, of E.

at his home in Yellowbud at 2 o'clock this morning, after a four days illness
with cerebral hemorrhage. The deceased was 69 years
of age and leaves a wife and six children, five sons and one daughter,
to mourn his demise.

Mrs. Artie Mae Beyerly, 81, widow of attorney Wade J. Beyerly Sr., died at 11:56 p.m. Wednesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs., Fred Byers, 248 W. second St. She had been ill about two days. Born at Richmond Dale on Oct. 5, 1872, she was a daughter of Jacob and Samantha leach on Jan. 31, 1891, and he died on Ag. 15,1945. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Ester G. Poore of Lakewood, Mrs. Helen S. Byrd of Sanderson, Texas, Mrs. Grace M. Bergman of Chillicothe, and Mrs. Byers, with whom she resided; five sons, Clare of Baltimore, Md., Harold S. a member of the U.S. diplomatic corps at Madrid, Spain, Capt. Irwin F., with the navy at San Francisco, Wade J. Jr., and Robert F., both of Chillicothe; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A son, Kenneth, and two brothers, Elmer Sigler of Huntington, w. Va., and Zoa Sigler of Richmond Dale, predeceased her. Mrs. Beyerly was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. in Winter Song Village, Washington C.H., following several months illness. He

Albert Augustine Brockmeyer, 4, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Brockmeyer, Brown Road, a mile south of Greenlawn Cemetery, died from spinal meningitis, Sunday in Children?s Hospital. His illness was due to a bruise suffered when his head hit the top of an auto in which he was riding in as it went over a bump on the road. Three brothers, Elroy, Wayne and Clyde, also survive. The deceased was born May 6, 1846, Pike County, the daughter of James and Sarah Clark. She was married to Mr. Collins in 1880. He died June 2, 1928. Retired City Teacher Dead at 62
Bainbridge- Joseph (Pop) Ferneau, 62, who had retired after teaching junior high history in the Chillicothe schools for 40 years, died unexpectedly at 12:15 AM, Sunday at his Bainbridge home. A member of the Bainbridge village council, he belonged to the Bainbridge United Methodist Church and was serving on its board of trustees. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Lewis Skiver officiating. Burial will be in Bainbridge Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. The son of Joseph C. and Belle Brown Ferneau, he was born on Sept. 8, 1908, in Bainbridge. On June 20, 1937, he was married to Helen Wipert who also is a retired teacher. Surviving in addition to his wife, is an aunt, Mrs. Effie Brown Redding;, Englewood, Fla. Mr. Ferneau graduated from Ohio State University and did graduate work at OSU. MISS MARTHA FINLEY
Finley, Miss Martha, author, born in Chillicothe, Ohio, 26th April, 1828. She has lived many years in Maryland. Her father was Dr. James B. Finley, of Virginia, and her mother was Mary Brown, of Pennsylvania. The Finleys and Browns are of Scotch-Irish descent and have martyr blood in their veins. The name of their clan was Farquarharson, the Gaelic of Finley, and for many years Miss Finley used that name as her pen name. In 1853 Miss Finley began her literary career by writing a newspaper story and a little book published by the Baptist Board of Publication. Between 1856 and 1870 she wrote more than twenty Sunday-school books and several series of juveniles, one series containing twelve books. These were followed by ?Casella? Philadelphia, 1869), ?Peddler of LeGrave,? ?Old Fashioned Boy? (Philadelphia, 1871), and ?Our Fred? (New York, 1874). It is through her ?Elsie? and ?Mildred? series that she has become popular as a writer for the young. Miss Finley?s pen has not been employed in writing exclusively for the young. She has written three novels. ?Wanted ?A Pedigree? (Philadelphia, 1879), and ?Signing the Contract? (New York, 1886), and ?Thorn in the Nest? (New York, 1886). for Henry Gaines, 66, of Tipp City,
Ohio, who died Tuesday at Dettmer General Hospital after a long illness. He had
been a patient for ten days. Mr. Gaines
was born September
26, 1893, in Scioto County, a son of Charles and Elizabeth Frazier Gaines. He had been a resident of Tipp City
for many years. Surviving are his wife, Doris; two daughters, Mrs. Elsie Bennett of Chillicothe and Mrs. Betty Massie of Tipp City; a stepson, Elmer Glenn of
Clearwater, Florida; six brothers, Oliver, Wayne and Thomas, all of Portsmouth; Louis of Detroit,
MI; Ted and
Dewey of Baltimore, Maryland; three sisters, Mrs. Pearl Marshell of Jeffersonville; Mrs. Phere Dome and Mrs. Laura Boss, both of Portsmouth; 17 grandchildren and
five great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Freda Bennett, of Circleville, preceded him in
death. Services are to be conducted at Coppock-Lee Memorial Home in Tipp City.
Burial is to be in New Carlisle Cemetery.

Gilmerr, 84, of New Holland, died noon Tuesday at his home.
Born July 11,
1896, in New Holland, he was the son of Levi and Alice Allen Gilmerr. Mr. Gilmerr, a retired carpenter, was the last World
War I veteran living in New Holland. He was a life member and past commander of
American Legion ARCH Post 477. Surviving are his widow, Norma Ater Gilmerr; two daughters, Willa Jean Ater of New Holland and Margaret Day Anders of Bookwalter; two sons, Michael Gilmerrr of Chillicothe and David Gilmerr of New Holland; stepson, Robert Entrekin of Washington Court House; nine grandchildren and
five great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Friday at 1:30 pm
at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in New Holland. Burial will follow in New Holland
Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 pm Thursday.

EDWIN D. GOEBEL, Chillicothe Gazette
Edwin D. Goebel, 75, died 11:35 PM Sunday, May 20, 1990 in Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. He was born December 11, 1914, in Granite City, Illinois, the son of Albert A. and Rebecca Steinhour Goebel. On August 8, 1937 he married Freda Miller, who survives. Also surviving are a son and daughter in law, Roger and Linda Goebel, Chillicothe; three grandchildren, Jeff Goebel, Amy Goebel, and Jackie Cartwright; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Goebel, Indiana, and Bill Myers, Chillicothe. He was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and Jack Goebel: and four brothers, Willard, Ernest, Donald, and Robert Myers. Mr. Goebel was a retired electrician with that IBEW Local 88 and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy Seabees. He was a member of the Walnut Street United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday in the Fawcett ? Oliver and Glass Funeral Home with Rev. Gerald Erter officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery. HOWARD D. HARDIN
Killed By a Falling Tree--- We learn from the Greenfield
Paper of last week, that Mr. Howard D. Hardin was killed in Ross county, about 6
miles from Greenfield, on Monday before last, by a tree falling upon the back of
his neck. He had cut down a tree, which in falling lodged, and while cutting
down the second tree, the lodged tree fell upon him. He was a married man, about
45 years of age, and leaves a wife and three children.

Edgar F. Hatfield,
son of Jacob and Hannah (Lowery) Hatfield was born in Alma, Ohio, January 4th,
1863, and departed this life on the 13th day of December,
1932, at the age of 69 years, 11 months and 9 days. He was married to
Adelia Colvin, December 23, 1885, who preceded him
in death July 3, 1900. The following children were born to this union; Purl of Kingston,
Earl A. and
Bert of Williamsport, O., and Alva J., of Chillicothe, Ohio, Bertha Dray and Anna Bryant of Washington C.H. Ohio. On March 26th, 1901,
he was united in marriage to Clara Harris
of Omega, Ohio. To this union son was born, Limon E. The
mother and son are both deceased. On December 12th, 1909, he was again untied in marriage
to Mrs. Fannie
Frye who is left to mourn his loss,
also two step-sons, Berchel and Edgar Frye of Columbus, Ohio. Also eighteen living
grandchildren and one grandchild dying in infancy. Many other relatives
and friends also mourn his death. The deceased leaves two brothers, Warren K. and
James of Chillicothe, Ohio, one brother, Louis, and one
sister, Ida
Lugenbell, deceased. The deceased
united at an early age with the Methodist Protestant Church at Alma, Ohio, and
has been a faithful Christian until time of his death. CARD OF THANKS: We wish

William b. Henderson, 92, a resident of the Byer community died Wednesday afternoon at the Penton Nursing Home. Born in Vinton County Oct. 3, 1877, he was the son of Matthew and Nancy Waldron Henderson. He was a retired B & O foreman on the Byer Junction. His wife, the former Ella Graves, died in 1937. Also preceding him in death was a son, John B. Henderson, who passed away in 1967. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Gilliland, Lima; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. John Henderson of Chillicothe, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Jenkins Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Raymond Patterson officiating. Burial will be in the Byer Cemetery. Mrs. Alice Hollar, of Route 3, died at her home at 12:30 AM Wednesday after an illness of several months. Death was due to complications. She was born in Ross county, February 13, 1868, the daughter of Frank and Mary Benner Ogle. She married Mr. William Hollar in 1888. Ernest C. Hysell, for many years an employee of the Gas and Water Company here and a World War Veteran, passed away Sunday morning at the Soldiers? Home at Dayton, Ohio. Surviving are two children, Ann and Charles, who make their home with their grandmother. Mrs. Elizabeth Kaltenbach; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Hysell; two borhters, and three sisters. The body may be seen at the Grohe home Tuesday afternoon until the hour of the funeral, which will be held at St. Peter?s Church Wednesday morning at 8:00 o?clock,. Paul V. Johnson, 45, Idaho, died at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at his home following an apparent heart attack. Service will be at the Penniston chapel at 2 p.m. Sunday, with the Rev. Miller, Mrs. Henry (Jane
Moore) died at her home in Stoutsville Sunday morning at three o'clock.
Her death was due to pneumonia she had been a suffer for several years with
paralysis. About a week ago she contracted the illness which was the cause of
her death. The
deceased was born in Ireland April 17, 1844(5) she was the daughter of Samuel and Margery
(Glass) Moore. She came to this country with her
parents when she was eight years of age and located in Ross County, near
Hallsville. She is
survived by her husband Henry Miller,
and seven children. They are: Mrs. Emanuel Hutchins,of Amanda, Mrs. Edward
Balthazer of Stoutsville, Mrs. Jacob Warner of Amanda, Harley Miller and Mrs. Samuel Gray of Columbus, Matt Miller and Miss Margaret Miller of Stoutsville. The funeral service
were held Tuesday afternoon at the Lutheran church at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Ruthford officiated. Interment was in Maple Hill
at Stoutsville.
HARRY T. MIDDLETON
Harry Truman Middleton, 78, of 426 South St., Greenfield, died at 8:38 p.m. Wednesday in Fayette memorial Hospital, Washington H.H. after an illness of several years. He was born near Fruitdale on May 28, 1876, a son of Ardon P. and Caroline Hutchinson Middleton. On Nov. 14, 1900 he married Venia Rodgers, who survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Hazel Augenstein of Marion County, Mrs. Helen Davis, at home, and Mrs. Bernice burke of Worthington; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Ida Moxley of Greenfield, Mrs. Estella Clyburn of Springfield and Mrs. Bertha Park of Oak Ridge, Tenn. A son, daughter, sister and two brothers pred eceased him. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Murray Funeral Home , where service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Roy C. MATHEW MOORE
Mathew Moore is a
native of the Emerald Isle, of Scotch-Irish descent, born June 11, 1838, son of
Samuel and
Margy Glass, both natives of
that same place. The Moore family emigrated to America in 1853, sailing from
Londonderry, and landing in Philadelphia after a ocean voyage of seven weeks,
during which time they experienced one very sever storm. From Philadelphia they
came west to Ohio, and have since made their home in Ross County. Mathew Moore is the fourth born in their family.
For three years
Mathew attended school in Philadelphia and during the day worked in a
woolen factory. After coming to Ohio he engaged in farming and continued to live
with his parents until a few years ago. For some time after coming here he
worked out by the day and month. Mr. Moore was married in 1882 to Miss Sallie
Rouse, a native of Hocking County, and
daughter of John and Jane Rouse, her
parents also being farmers. Mr. and Mrs. Moore have no children. Mr. Moore affiliates with Democratic party and
has filled various local offices
SAMUEL MOORE
Samuel Moore, died at
the residence of his son-in-law, Henry Miller, in
Clearcreek Township, Fairfield County. on 12th inst., aged 91 years and 9
month's. He was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, in April 1802. He was united in
marriage in 1821 to Miss Margery Glass, who was also born in County Tyrone, Ireland, in
June 1796, and died November 12, 1893, just two months preceding her husband's
death, aged 97 years and 6 months. They emigrated to America and settled in
Philadelphia, PA, in the year 1853. Three years later they moved to Hocking
County, Ohio, where they moved to Colerain township, Ross county, O
(Ohio). Here they continued to reside on their farm near Hallsville,
until two years ago, when they were taken to Stoutsville where they might brave
the care of their only daughter, Mrs. Henry Miller. To
this couple were born eight children, six of whom are living, Viz: Edward, James,
and William
in Kansas; Matthew
in Ross, County, O.; David and Mrs. Henry Miller
near Stoutsville, Fairfield County.

Waverly- Malcolm R. Oyer, 44, 309 Vine St., was found dead at 11 a.m. Sunday at his residence from an apparent heart attack. The funeral will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, at the Botkin Funeral Home. Mr. Oyer was a veteran of World War II and a former employee of the Waverly State Bank. Born on December 1, 1927, in Waverly, he was the son of Unreadable and Mabel Haynes Oyer. Surviving are his father, of the Vine Street address, four brothers, James W., Route 3, Waverly, Frederick W., and Harry T., Waverly, and Eugene D., Latham, and sister, Miss Wynona M. Oyer, Columbus. A graduate of Waverly High School, Mr. Oyer attended Ohio State University where he was a member of the marching band and graduated from Ohio University. He was a member of the Waverly Bible Christian Church.

Mrs. Geraldine M. Park, 37, of Rozelle Creek road, route 7 died at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday at Chillicothe hospital following an extended illness. She was a member of the Mt. Tabor Church where service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Amel Hughes will officiate and burial will follow in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery. Friends may call at the Fawcett-Oliver and Glass Funeral Home after noon Saturday and at the church after 12:30 p.m. Sunday. A native of Elliott County, Ky., she was born on May 1, 1932 to Arnold and Esther McQuay Boggs. On Dec. 31, 1949 she was married to Alvin G. Park who survives. Also surviving are her mother of rout 5, two daughters, Mrs. William (Susan L.) Alexander, Newport, R.I., and Shelly Park, two sons, Steven and Scott, all at home, a sister, Mrs. James (Sandra) Payne, Chillicothe, and three brothers, Robert Boggs, Route 5, Wallace Boggs, Piketon, and Terrance Boggs, Fort Bragg, N.C. Mrs. Park had been branch librarian at the Ross County Library for the last year. Active in school work, she was a member of the Huntington Garden Club, Hunting band Boosters, and Hunting Mothers Club.

Nancy Reed, a colored woman, 107 years old, for many years an inmate of the Ross County Infirmary, died on Wednesday night of last week.

GEORGE RENICK
DIED--- At his residence on Paint Hill, in the vicinity of
Chillicothe, on Tuesday the 15th inst., Mr.
George Renick, aged 87 years in seven days. The deceased was one of the earliest
settlers of Ross County, having settled there in 1802. He was one of the first
citizens of Ohio who devoted attention to the improvement of our native cattle
by importation of foreign herds, and was celebrated for his success in this
branch of agricultural improvement. He was the first to open the trade in cattle
between this state and the Baltimore market, which afterwards became such a
source of wealth to the Scioto Valley. He sent his first thought of cattle to
the market in 1804 in 1805. He was a Native of Hardy County, Virginia, and was
distinguished through life for his upright character, public spirit, and
benevolencelence. We glean the above facts from an obituary notice in the
Chillicothe Gazette of September 22d.

JOHN SCHRECK
Death comes to John Schreck. Aged man struck at Bridge Street by train
succumbs.
Injuries sustained when he walked into the path of incoming of east bound B & O freight No. 94 at the Bridge Street crossing, Wednesday, about 2:00 PM, resulted in the death of John Schreck, 83, of 355 Riverside Street, at the Chillicothe Hospital about 6:00 last night. Schreck was knocked halfway across the street by the train and died probably without ever knowing what struck him. He never regained consciousness, suffering a probable fracture of his skull and fractures of the right arm and leg and internal injuries. He was attended at the hospital by Dr. D. A. Perrin, who did not attempt a complete examination, due to the aged man?s condition. The victim was a native of Ross county, born March 20, 1849, son of Isaac and Julia Schreckengaust. And 1891, he was married to Alice Clark, who died in 1928. He and his family shortened their name to Schreck several years ago. He is survived by a son, William, two daughters, Ruth and Hazel, all of this city; one brother, Henry, city; three sisters, Mrs. Thomas Johnson, of California, and Mrs. Charles Downs and Mrs. Caroline Downs of this city. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 PM, from Lowery?s Funeral Home, with Rev. Butler in charge. Burial will be made in Overly?s Chapel Cemetery.

OSCAR SCHRECK
Oscar Schreck, son of Byron and Edith Cook Schreck, of Huntington township passed away at the city hospital Saturday afternoon at 3:45 o?clock, death resulting from a five days illness with pneumonia. He was born at Higby, Ohio, June 14, 1917 and was twelve years old at the time of death. Surviving are his parents, two sisters, Irene and Delcie and one brother and one half brother; Paul and Leroy, all at home. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at one o?clock from the church in Alma with interment in Bland cemetery.

William K. Schreck, 70, of 636 Pine Street, who operated a General Insurance agency at that address, died at 7:10 PM, Sunday at Chillicothe Hospital. He had been in failing health for two years and seriously ill one day. Service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday at the Ware Funeral Home with the Rev. Raymond Welch officiating. Burial will follow in Hallsville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4:00 PM Tuesday. A native Chillicotheian, he was born on February 8, 1900 to John and Alice Clark Schreck. On October 30, 1925 he was married to Cecile F. Gray who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Forest (Betty) Larrick, Cincinnati, a son, William G., Columbus, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs.. Ruth Dowler, this city, and Mrs. Hazel Moore, La Mesa, California, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Schreck was a member, past president and past secretary of the Chillicothe Independent Insurance Agents Association. He also was a member of the Phi Sigma Fraternity.

Pansy Mae Secrest, 70, of Simmons Road, Frankfort, died 6:00 AM Sunday, May 20, 1990, at her residence. She was born April 9, 1920 in Urbana, Ohio to Elmer and Rosa Statin Evans. On May 10, 1938, she married Earl Secrest, who died July 19, 1965. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Maxine) Newman, Mrs. Mac (Janet) Lambert, Mrs. Bo (Mick) Adams, and Mrs. Howard (Patty) Estep, all of Frankfort; five sons, Bill, Ted, Melvin, and Gerry Secrest, all of Frankfort, and Wendell Secrest, North Carolina; 18 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and one step great grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Bobbitt (Doris) Phillips, Columbus and Mrs. Juanita Dexter, Logan, Ohio. She was predeceased by one daughter, Hazel Estep; two brothers, Ralph and Carl Evans; and one sister, Helen Patrick. Mrs. Secrest was a retired nursing assistant for the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Chillicothe. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM in the Fisher -Anderson -Ebright Funeral Home, Frankfort, with Rev. Elza Goodman officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Frankfort. Shasteen, 63, of 454 N. High St., a retired plumber, died at
8:15 p.m. Monday at Chillicothe Hospital following an extended illness. The son
of Robert and
Nancy Murphy Shasteen, he was born on Nov. 26, 1905 in Ross
County. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. George D. (Oda)
Arledge, with whom he lived, and
Mrs. Myrle (Sarah)
Croft of Columbus, and several nieces and
nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers. The funeral will be at
2 p.m. Thursday at the Ware Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Norman officiating. Burial will be in Springbank

SHASTEEN
A wide circle of friends mourns the loss of Mrs.
Nancy Shasteen, of 511 North High Street,
who passed away Sunday at 12:50 a.m. at her home. Born Feb. 2, 1870 in Pickaway
County, the daughter of William and Mary Murphy, she was one of a family of nine children,
all but three of whom heave preceded her in death. In 1886, she married
Robert Shasteen, and seven children
were born to this union. Surviving are four daughters; Mrs. Dennis Bennett of Yellowbud, Mrs. Hugh Winks and Mrs. George Arledge of Chillicothe, and Mrs. Merle Croft
of Columbus; one son, Mr. Frederick Shasteen of Chillicothe; two sisters, Mrs.
Sarah Hastings and Mrs. George Jones of Williamsport; one brother, Mr.
Edward Murphy of Yellowbud; 22 grandchildren and 9
great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2:30 pm at
Springbank church, with Rev. E.A. Keaton
officiating. Interment will be in Springbank cemetery. Friends may call at the
residence.

Robert Shasteen, Park
Street, died early Monday morning at the City Hospital, death resulting from a
complication of disease. He was the son of Mr. And Mrs. Robert
Shasteen. Surviving are the widow,
one son, Fredrick, and four daughters, Mrs. Hugh Winks, Mrs., Dennis Bennett, Mrs. George Arledge and Mrs. Merl Croft. The funeral procession will leave
the residence at 1 p.m. Wednesday for Springbrook church where services will be
conducted by the Rev. Dean. Interment will
be in the adjoining cemetery.

BETTY STRAUS
Betty Straus, of
Danville, Ill., a native of Chillicothe, died December 13 at
the age of 84
years. Miss Strauss was the
daughter of the late Ellas and Sarah Straus, residents of Church Street. Miss
Straus was the last known member of her
family, her brother, Sam Straus,
who conducted the grocery store at High and Arch Sts., established by his
father, having disappeared from the city, and having never been heard form
afterward. After leaving Chillicothe, Miss Strauss went to New York, where she became buyer
for Gimble Brothers. In 1891 she and her brother, Julius Straus, and Charles Hecht, also a native of this city, opened a
millinery store in Danville, Ill., which she conducted until the time of her
death.

REV. ELIJAH TRUETT

Rev. Elijah Truett (Truitt),
of Ross county, O.,
died May 7, 1853. He was born in Sussex county, Delaware, February 24, 1770, and
was awakened and converted in the nineteenth year of his age, under the
preaching of Rev. Ebenezer Everett. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, of
which he remained a member till death. Soon after his conversion he erected the
family altar in his father's house, and under his first prayer a sister was
awakened, and soon the whole family united with the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Soon after his second marriage, which occurred October 9, 1794, he removed to
the state of Georgia, where he lived about ten years; but becoming disgusted
with slavery and its connections, he returned to the state of Delaware, and a
few months afterward removed to Ross county, O. He received license to preach in
1808, and in 1815 joined the itinerancy, and was appointed to Salt Creek
circuit. In 1816 he traveled Scioto circuit. In 1817, he was received in full
connection, elected deacon, and appointed to Brush Creek circuit. At the close
of this year he located. He was an acceptable member of the Church sixty-three
years, and a preacher about forty-five. As a man and a Christian he was
remarkable for his uprightness, integrity, affability, and humility. As a
preacher he was acceptable and useful: hence, Christians loved him, and all
respected him; and when the Master called, his work was done, he was ready to
go.

Elmer L. Valentine, of 362 Arch Street, past commander of Wiedler Camp No. 48 United Spanish War Veterans, died at his residence at 6:25 PM Tuesday. Death was due to a heart ailment. A retired Miller, he was born at DeGaff, Ohio, October 20, 1878, the son of William and Estee Lippencott Valentine. He married Mrs. Kate Near, December 20, 1903. He is survived by his widow; one daughter, Miss Elizabeth Valentine, at home; three sons, Mr. Willard Valentine, Wilmette, Illinois, and Messrs, Glenn and Lyle Valentine, of Chillicothe; and five grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Mrs. Charles Valentine, of Springfield, and two sisters, Mrs. Frank Matheson, of Galion, and Mrs. Charles Benstein, of Farmington, Michigan. Service will be conducted at Ware Funeral Home at 2:00 PM Friday, the Rev. of S.W. Rosenberger officiating. Intermittent will be in Grandview Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
SCOTT WHEELER
Scott Wheeler, son of William H. and Jeannie Retherford Wheeler, was born April 28, 1899 in Liberty Township, Ross County, Ohio. He departed this life at his home near Washington Court House, Ohio, February 4, 1929. He spent most of his boyhood in Ross County moving there with his parents from Highland County. They lived there but a year, then moved to Clinton County where he spent the last seven years of his life. Scott never united with any church, but he was honest, upright, and temperate and his habits and had repeatedly expressed his assurance in Christ. He was remarkably kind in his cheerful disposition, loyalty to friends, and generous devotion to those near and dear to him merited the large measure of love and esteem accorded to him by those who knew him best. For the past year he had been in failing health but through all of his sickness he never complained, always bearing his suffering patiently, hoping that God would spare his to raise his children. He was united in marriage to Catherine Dolph of Martinsville, Ohio, June 18, 1924. To this union there were born two daughters, Reba Jean, age three years of and Virginia Eileen, age 20 months. Those who survives him are his wife, two children, father, mother, two brothers, Lloyd and Hasea, both of Martinsville, Ohio, and one sister, Mrs. William Lee, at home and a brother, Clifford, who preceded him in death, beside the host of relatives and friends by whom he will be sadly missed.

He was born July
17, 1924, in Chillicothe to Hugh and Amy Shasteen Winks. He was preceded in death by his wife of
55 years Juanita
(Murray) Winks.
He is survived by his son Randy Winks and
daughter-in-law Veronica, of Chillicothe; granddaughters Valerie (Jesse) Warnock of Columbus, and Tiffany Winks of Myrtle Beach, SC. Also surviving are
sisters, Mrs. Jack
(Leona) Flack and Mrs. Russell (Emma) Suttles, and brother-in-law Gerald (Darlene) Murray, sister-in-laws Mrs. Ralph (Genevieve)
Clark and Mrs. Russell (Norma) Winks; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and
nephews; many friends and He was predeceased by his parents, a sister Helen Frey, and brothers, Walter, William, and
Russell Winks, and sister-in-laws Elwanda Doyle, Margie Kinney, and
Pauline Winks and brother-in-laws, Michael Frey, Jack Flack, and
Russell Suttles. Mr. Winks retired from
Wear-Ever in 2982, after 34 years of service. He was a WWII Army veteran, owner
and operator of Valley House Restaurant from 1978 to 1987, and held an Ohio
Auctioneers License for over 40 years. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m.

Deaths ? in New York on the 20th ult. General Thomas Worthington, of
Ross County, Ohio, and late governor of the state of Ohio. His remains have been
brought to Chillicothe, and interred with military and civil honors.
