William Sundhelmer, 83, retired hardware merchant, died at 1:10 Sunday morning in his home at Shanesville after an illness of several years.

Born in Holmes-co, he settled in Strasburg as a young man and was employed in a brick plant. In 1921 he and his son-in-law, Harry Andrews, became partners in a hardware store in Shanesville, in which Mr. Sundhelmer was active until his retirement in 1943. He was a member of the Evangelical and Reformed Church of Sugarcreek. Survivors include his widow Clara (Hans) Sudhelmer, a son Walter, a daughter, Mrs. Harry Andrews; a brother John; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Evangelical & Reformed church with Rev. O. B. Moor officiating. Burial will be in Grandview cemetery in Strasburg. Friends may call at the Everhart-Hattery Funeral Home in Shanesville until 1 p.m. tomorrow, when the body will be removed to the church. The casket also will be opened at the graveside.

 

Charles Stevens Rice, 86, retired Methodist minister and college professor, of Frankton, Ind., died at 7:55.p, m, Sunday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Oscar Smith, 148 Tuscarawas-ave NW, New Philadelphia.

Mr. Rice had been at his daughter's home for one week following several weeks in Mercy Hospital in Canton. He was born Dec. 23, 1883, at Harrisburg, Pa., a son of the late Charles and Mary Elizabeth Rice. He had taught at Findley College and Ohio University and had resided at Frankton 17 years. In addition to his daughter, Mrs. Smith, he is survived by his widow, Alice, three sisters, Mrs. John Costin and Mrs. Mary Hauer of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. William Price of San Francisco, Calif., and two grandchildren.

The body was sent by the Kaserman Funeral Home to the King Funeral Home in Frankton this morning. Services will be held there Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Stroup officiating. Burial will be in the K of P and IOOF cemetery at Frankton.

Miss Mary Patterson Downs 86, retired seamstress, died at the home of her nephew, Paul Menus, RD 1, Uhrichsville, at 12:,15 a. m on Monday of carcinoma following an Illness of two years.

Born in Harrison-co on January 9, 1863 she was a daughter of the late George M, and Ann Elizabeth Downs. She had been a resident of Park Valley since 1909 and was a member of the Feed S p r i n g Presbyterian church and the Ladles Aid of that church. She is survived by one brother, William R. Downs, of Park Valley, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p. m, from the R. K, Lindsey Funeral Home with the Rev. George Neal officiating. Burial will be made in the Feed Spring cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home.

 

John Alva Veley, 80, retired farmer, died at the home of his son, Roy Veley, in Stlllwater, at 8:15 last night of cerebral thrombosis. He had been in ill health for the past five years, and seriously ill for the past week.

He had been a resident of Stillwater for thirty years and was a member of the Uhrichsville Methodist Church. His wife, Mary Agnes Johnson Veley, died on April 3, 1949.

He is survived by one son, Roy Veley, of Stillwater; two daughters, Mrs. John Marstrell, of Stillwater, Mrs. Harry Plotts, of Uhrichsville; eighteen grandchildren; two great - grandchildren, and two brothers, Bert Veley, of Nevada, and Lester Veley, of Delaware. Two sons, William and Archie, three brothers, Milo, James and Mitchell, and two sisters, Mrs. Esther Pitttnan and Mrs. Corey Main are deceased.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2 p. m. from the H. J. Uhrich and Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Leroy Miller and the Rev. George Sweeney officiating. Burial will be made In the Gnadenhutten cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home.

 

Graveside services were held at 10 a. m. Monday for Marty Marie Hays, one day old daughter of Clarence and Joyce M. Hays, Dennison, who died at Twin City Hospital on Saturday. She was born in the hospital on December 30. In addition to her parents she is survived by one brother and one sister. Burial was in charge of the R. K.. Lindsey Funeral Home. The Rev. L. L. Kollar officiated and burial was made in Union cemetery.

 

 Jean Ellen Harrison, 5-day-old I daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene  Harrison of 522 Tuscarawas-ave,  New Philadelphia, died at 1 p. m. yesterday in Union Hospital , In addition to her parents, she  is survived by the grandparents,  Mr. and Mrs. Bryon Harrison of Scio and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hamilton of Gnadenhutten.

Thomas Chalmers, 73, died yesterday morning in his home at  Mineral City from the effects of a stroke s u f f e r e d Saturday. He had been ill the past year.

Native of Pennsylvania and retired coal miner, he lived in Mineral City 70 years and was a member of Caldwell Lodge, F. & A.M., at Bolivar. Surviving are the widow, Elsie; five sisters, Mrs. Christine Dolvin of Stone Creek, Mrs. Walter Fackler of New Philadelphia, Mrs. Andrew Decker, Jean Chalmers and Finis Chambers, all of Canton, and a brother, William, also of Canton. 

Rev. Robert M. Gay will conduct funeral services Friday at 2 p. m. at the Gordon Funeral Home in Mineral City where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in Mineral City cemetery.

Lorenze Burdette, 93, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Anna Riggs at Newcomerstown this morning.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Ann Jacobs; the following children, Mrs. Lily Phillips, Urichsville, Mrs. Anna Riggs, Newcomerstown, Mrs. Cora Casteel, New Philadelphia, Harry Burdette, Gnadenhutten, Fred Burdette, Uhrichsville, and Mrs. Violet Dudzink, Dennison; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Mary Porter, Port Washington and one brother, Marion Burdette, Gnadenhutten. A daughter Mrs. Lucy Chapman died two weeks ago. Funeral services will be held at the W. E. Ourant Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Henry Holyoak officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Uhrichsville. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Thursday.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p. m. tomorrow at Calvery Cemetery in New Philadelphia for David Lewis Russell, infant son of Frank and Shirley Hunt Russell  of 1024 N. Main-st, Uhrichsville who died at Twin City hospital at 11:30 a.m. today shortly after birth. 
He is survived by one sister, and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Russell ,and  Mr. and Mrs.  Irvin  Hunt of Uhrichsville. Burial will be in charge of R. E. Lindsey Funeral home.

Mrs. Nellie R. Deal, 77, widow of Upton Deal and life resident of Beach City, died this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hazel Gardner of Beach City. She had been ill several months.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Deal is survived by a grandson and a great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Adams-Lantzer Funeral Home with Rev. James Amos, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Toledo, officiating. Burial will be in South Lawn cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral parlors after 3 p.m. tomorrow.

Funeral services for Mrs. Caroline Lind, 97, Dover's oldest resident, who died yesterday morning at the home of her son, Alvin of 1119 N. Wooster-ave, will be held at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Toland Funeral Home, Mrs. Lind was preceded in death by her husband Phillip and a daughter, Mrs. Clara Schneider.
