James Mitchell Varnum
Varnum, James Mitchell, soldier, lawyer, jurist, state legislator, congressman, was born Dec. 17, 1748, in Dracut, Mass. In 1774 he accepted the command of company called the Kentish guards; and in 1777 was promoted to the rank of brigadier-general. In 1779 he resigned his commission in the army; and the legislature appointed him major-general of militia. In 1780-82 and 1786-87 he was a delegate from Rhode Island to the continental congress.
