Defiance Democrat

William Blair, aged ninety-one years, died at Stryker, on the 21 inst. Mr. Blair was a veteran of 1812. He was the last survivor of the marines who fought under Commodore Perry. In 1813, the Governor of Pennsylvania awarded him a silver medal for gallantry displayed at the naval battle which resulted in "Perry's Victory". This medal was proudly cherished by the gallant veteran and constitutes valuable heir-loom to his descendents. His remains were conveyed to Mansfield, Ohio, for interment, and placed beside those of his wife, who died several years ago. That his remains should be placed beside hers was the the dying request of the old soldier, and exhibits a beautiful instance of the constancy of affection, reaching on life, as it did, almost to the full and rounded period of a century.

ESTEEMED CITIZEN CALLED BY DEATH

Henry Krill, Widely Known Merchant, Closes His Earthly Career

At about 2:30 o'clock this (Thursday) morning the earthly career of Henry Krill came to a close. While his death was not unexpected, yet it was received with a great shock as the word was passed along.

Mr. Krill was one of the early pioneer business men of Edgerton, coming here in about 1874. Serving an apprenticeship with J.H. Miller in the undertaking and furniture business, he became a partner and later bought Mr. Miller's interest in the business. All caskets were custom made in those days.

Last April marked his 63rd year of entrance in business in Edgerton. In later years his sons Edwin and Oscar became affiliated with him in the work. Oscar has charge of the Krill & Son mortuary at Bryan and Edwin in Edgerton.

Mr. Krill had been confined to his bed for several weeks. Although he was barely able to do so, he got up from his sick bed on Thanksgiving and ate dinner with his children and their families. He remarked at the time that it would be the last observance of the day for him.

Deceased always took an interest in civic affairs, serving as councilman, mayor and on board of education at various times.

For many years he had been a loyal member of the Methodist Episcopal church, punctual in attendance, liberal in his giving, and faithful in his service.

He was a member of the order of Knights of Pythias and Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

He was a man of untiring energy and ambition, strictly honest and ever ready to extend generous aid to friends.

Mr. Krill had been in declining health for several years, but was active as a business man until failing powers could no longer serve him. Had he lived until April he would have reached his 80th milestone.

Surviving is the widow, three sons, Oscar, of Bryan, Edwin and Paul, of Edgerton, and a daughter, Mrs. W.S. Unger of Melbern.

Funeral services will be held from the M.E. church Friday at 3 pm, Rev. Horst officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 1:30 until 3 pm.

While driving to Montpelier about two o'clock Friday afternoon, David S. Tressler, a prominent farmer who resided about 2 miles northeast of Blakeslee was struck by a Wabash train, and died two hours later from injuries received.  Mr. Tressler was riding in a buggy with side curtains and it is thought he did not see the train as he attempted to cross the Wabash tracks near his home.  Because of the cold weather, Mr. Tressler had a muffler about his head and as he is also slightly deaf, he probably did not hear the approaching train.  He is sixty-five years old and is survivied by a widow and five children

Surviving besides his wife, Edna, are four brothers, Arthur and Elmer Strausborger, Edgerton, Olin and Claire, Elkhart, Ind., one sister, Mrs. Nora Economu, Chicago; a step-son, Samuel Alleman, Quincy, Mich.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Grace Stausborger, Edgerton; a step-grandson, Ronald Alleman, and a step-granddaughter, Mrs. Phyllis Arnold.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Strausborger and two sisters, Mrs. Julia Summers and Miss Ida Strausborger. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery.
