~Fort Meigs Union Cemetery History~

After the War of 1812 many newcomers to Wood county were not accepting of the local custom of family plots on homesteads for burying grounds. They were more accustomed to organized community burial grounds with monuments/headstones to mark the graves of their loved ones. They began the search for land to build a community cemetery. Perrysburg Village Cemetery, the first cemetery in Perrysburg, was established and became active about 1822. Lots were sold for the price of $1. As the population grew the Village purchased new land for a new cemetery which is now Fort Meigs Union Cemetery. Removals from the Perrysburg Village cemetery, which was located on Indiana Avenue, started in early 1850 and continued on through 1853. All of the tombstones that had dates preceding 1848 or 1849 had been moved to the new cemetery at Fort Meigs Union Cemetery. No new burials were then made in the "little old Village cemetery" but it was not left abandoned. A gentleman by the name of John Croft purchased the cemetery property of the "old Village cemetery" about 1911. It is said that some of the tombstones that had not been removed were used in house foundations and is also said that some may still be in use as stepping stones.
