The northern edge of Grady County is the beginning of the old Chickasaw Nation. Very few Native Americans lived there, and the land was inhabited by cattlemen. Many of the cattlemen married Chickasaw women, and were adopted members of the tribe. Some operated their farms and ranches illegally.

Chickasha is the county seat, and it was established in 1892 with the arrival of the Rock Island railroad.
