LeFlore County is in the extreme eastern part of the state. It is a large county, having an area of 1,731 square miles. Of this amount, about 50 square miles, is very mountainous, including Sugar Loaf mountain and Mt. Cavanal, two of the highest elevations in the state. Over 1,200 square miles were originally covered with a heavy forest growth. The principal streams are the Arkansas and Poteau rivers. The principal minerals are coal, lead, zinc and asphalt - nearly all undeveloped. The leading farm crops are cotton and corn. There are a few fine orchards in the county. The population of the county is about 25,000. The Frisco, Kansas City Southern and Fort Smith & Western railways have lines in operation in the county. There are also two short independent coal mine lines. Poteau is the county seat and also the largest town.
