County Seat is Nowata
The earliest evidence of humans here is the prehistoric Indians living in this area such as the Ozark
Bluff Dwellers and the Lower Mound Builders.
The Osage Indians were living in this area in the 1700ís-early 1800ís.
The Cherokee Indians became the titled owners of most of Northeastern Oklahoma from 1817 to 1830, which included
all of Nowata County.
