Welcome
to Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma Genealogy Trails

My name is Linda and I am the county host. Alot of my own father lived in this county for quite some time. I have done alot of personal research in this county myself so I will begin with my own families information. As I can I will also begin adding additional information on others. I would appreciate receiving anything that you would like to enter on this page, except for family trees. I do not have the time to extract the older information from the newer. The names I will adding information on are the Helm, Dyer, Littleton and their spouces lines whenever possible. I am dedicating this site to my father, Virgil Wallace Dyer who was born near Earlsboro, Oklahoma on August 13, 1910. He later moved with his parents to Oklahoma City where he remained until his death on May 8. 1982.

My father, Virgil Wallace Dyer was born on August 13, 1910 on a small farm near Earlsboro, Oklahoma in Pottawatomie County. His parents were Dock David Dyer and Edna Blanche (Helm) Littleton Dyer. His siblings were also born in Pottawatomie County. Vernie Martin Dyer was born June 16, 1908. His mother was the widow of John Wesley Littleton before her marriage to Dock Dyer on January 30, 1906. She had three children by him. Thad Wesley Littleton was born on August 23, 1896, Bessie was born February 4, 1898 and Willia Jean was born on January 25, 1901. Their father died in October 13, 1900 and is buried in the Union Cemetery near Earlsboro.. Dock and Edna were in Oklahoma City in 1910, but returned to Pottawatomie County shortly after, they moved to Oklahoma City again permanently by 1920. My father attended schools in Pottawatomie County and then in Oklahoma City up thru the 9th grade when he left school to go to work to help his family. His first job was that of a newspaper boy for the Daily Oklahoman. They gave their carriers a bicycle and a shoulder bag for being carriers back then. He met my mother, Venie Lorenia Jones when his family rented rooms from her mother. I bet he didn't know then that she would be his future bride. They were married on January 1, 1932. They soon bought a small house in south rural Oklahoma City. Soon however then city grew out to their location on what is now Southwest 46th and South Pennsylvania Avenue. My mom was elated when the shopping center was built across the street from us in the early 1960's. My parents owned and operated their own cleaners on S.W. 29th and Walker until WWII broke out. They sold their business fearing that dad would have to go to war. However, the army wouldn't pass him on his physical because he had no sense of smell. After the war ended he worked for many years at Quick Charge Electric, then Little Giant Pump Company, and finally as the Parts Department Supervisor for Southwest Electric Company until his retirement. He attended church at the Southwest Church of Christ until his health declined. He passed away on April 9, 1982 of reoccurring pneumonia and altzheimers. He was laid to rest at Resthaven Cemetery. |
