Another New Star In The Flag
Washington, Nov.
16; The state of Oklahoma was
admitted to the Union today
President Roosevelt this morning
signed the proclamation adding the territories of Indian Territory
and Oklahoma
jointly as one state. In
affixing his signature the president used a pen made from a quill
taken from a quill taken
from the wing of
an American eagle. The pen will be deposited in the archives of
the Oklahoma historical society.
The
proclamation creating the new state was signed by the president in
the cabinet room in the presence of a number
of citizens of Oklahoma. Senators Carter
and Dixon of Montana and Warner of Missouri. When he had finished
writing
his name the president looked up
and exclaimed “Oklahoma is a state.” He then rose, bowed and
retired to his private
office.
