Operetta
On May 11, 1923, the Glee clubs presented “Swords and Scissors” under the direction of Misses Cora and Ruth Hjertaas and Mr. W.H. McMaster. The story takes place in the gardens of Malmaison, where Empress Josephine of France, Dorothy Kyler, and her ladies, Doris Dowlin, Virginia Baish, Mary Morgan, Dorothy Thornquist and Helen Rhoades are lamenting the fact that they have no money to buy new dresses for a ball. Mlle. Rose de Vidal, Flora McCoy, tells the Empress of a tailor named Moreau, George Dinwiddie, about whom her fiancé Colonel Regnier, Webley Edwards, has told her, and who is not in a hurry for his money. Truffle, Herbert Edmondson, a detective, overhears the conversation, and jumps to the conclusion that it is General Jean Victor Moreau, who has been exiled to America for treason, and that the queen is involved in a conspiracy with him. He tells his chief Fouche, minister of police, William Handford, of the plot to bring Moreau to Malmaison secretly. Fouche tells Napoleon, Maurice Bauchannan, who is very loathe to believe the matter. He and Fouche plot to catch Josephine and her court with Moreau and find, much to their surprise, that it is not General Moreau at all. Napoleon forgives Josephine and gives her plenty of money with which to buy new dresses.©Shauna Williams |

Junior-Senior Banquet, ‘23 On April twentieth, occurred the annual junior-senior banquet. The auditorium was a profusion of flowers and the tables were set under a canopy of blue and white, the junior colors. The tiny May-poles, place cards, and favors carried out the May Day idea on the tables. The program was well started by the singing of two popular Corvallis high songs. This was followed by a May-pole dance given by waiters and waitresses. Between courses a solo by Doris Dowlin, ’24, was very well received. Everyone enjoyed the Spring Dance given by little Misses Carolyn Gaskins and Cleona Jones. After dinner Toastmaster McMaster introduced Rayborn Clifotn, junior president, who welcomed the senior class. Herbert Edmondson, senior president, responded in their behalf. Miss Crandall, junior advisor, and Miss Hjertaas, senior advisor, have clever toasts for their respective classes. Mr. McMaster gave the final talk congratulating the juniors on their success in the banquet. ©Shauna Williams |
