In
1917 and 1918 approximately 24 million men registered
for the draft in the United States. These included men
born from Sept 11, 1872 to Sept 12, 1900. I have added
information and corrections [in brackets] to the
information from the smaller index. In addition, I
have separated the kinship and residence information
from the place of birth into two separate columns.

Where
to go from here
Researchers are encouraged to view the original
registration card to which this index refers, as
the index does not include all of the information on
the cards, such as street address of next of kin and
detailed information about locations. Researchers
should also be
aware that these are only the names of people who
registered for the draft. Most did not actually serve
in the military during World War One.
These registration cards have been
microfilmed by the U.S. National Archives and Records
Administration. A copy of this microfilm is available
through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints and is housed at the Family History Library in
Salt Lake City, UT and available in branch family
history centers throughout the world. The draft card
microfilm reels are listed in the church's Family
History Library Catalog under UNITED STATES --
MILITARY RECORDS -- WORLD WAR I.
The World
War I Draft Registration Cards (with digital images)
Index (24 million records) is available online from
Ancestry.com (requires payment). The smaller World
War I Civilian Draft Registration Index (1.2
million records) is free and includes most Oregon
registrants, but does not contain the street address
for the next of kin or detailed information about the
location where the registration was completed.
