Harney County is available for adoption!

Hi, I'm Shauna Williams the host of the Oregon and Polk county sites. As you can see this county is looking for someone to adopt it and spend some time making it look nice and fill it with helpful information for the researchers searching in the area! Please check out the volunteer page to find out what it takes to be a host and while you are looking around why don't you join the mailing list for the Pacific Coast States!

In 1889, Harney, the largest county in Oregon, was carved out of Grant County and named for Harney Lake. The lake, in turn, was named for Maj. Gen. William S. Harney, commander of the Department of Oregon, U.S. Army, from 1858–59. Harney was instrumental in opening areas of eastern Oregon for settlement.
