Obituary
George Weart, a brother of Mrs. A. L. Holcombe of
this place, W.A. Weart of Blawenburg and Mrs. J.H. Blackwell of
Trenton, died on July 2d, at his home in Hood River, Oregon, of
paralysis, after an illness of about a week. Interment was at Hood
River.
Mr. Weart was a resident of New Jersey all his
life until about two years ago, when he removed from his home at
Deal Beach at Oregon. He was about 72 years of age and was well
known by many of the older residents of this place and vicinity,
with whom he associated in his younger days when he resided here. He
was among the first ones in this state to enlist as a volunteer in
the war of the rebellion and served his country during the entire
war. His brother, James M. Weart, for whom the G.A.R. Post in this
place was named, was the first volunteer to sign his name to the
roll in New Jersey.

Former Billings Resident Dies
Funeral services were held in Hood River, Ore., for a
former Billings resident, Mrs. Elizabeth Bakker, relatives reported
Monday.
Mrs. Bakker, 70, wife of Abe Bakker, died in a Hood
River nursing home Dec. 15 of a heart ailment. She lived in Billings
32 years before moving to Oregon with her husband in 1951. Burial
was in Idlewild Cemetery, Hood River.
Mrs. Bakker was born Dec. 10, 1887, in Holland, Mich.,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Straatsma.
She is survived by her husband, three daughters, Mrs.
John G. Brown of Grassrange, Mrs. Robert J. Brown of Hood River and
Mrs. Norman Wallace of Rt. 3, Billings; three sons, Peter A. Bakker,
435 Laurie Lane, William Bakker, 1304 Miami St., and Jack Bakker,
2016 Hewitt Dr.; two sisters, Mrs. Kate Andresien of Bozeman and
Miss Martha Straatsma of Beverly Hills., Calif.; two brothers, Nick
Straatsma of Gillette, Wyo., and Ruel Straatsma of Rogers, Ark., and
18 grandchildren.

Walter Landreem Hale
Walter Landreem Hale, a Hood River., Ore., resident for
the past 30 years, died early Friday morning at a Hood River
hospital. He was 83.
Mr. Hale was born Feb. 13, 1891, near Winlock.
Surviving are a brother, Edward E. Hale, Winlock; five
nieces, Carol Jillette and Janet Fisk, both of Seattle; Mrs. Phil
(Annie Jo) Rector, Olympia; Mrs. Robert (Margaret) Snider,
Anchorage, Alaska, and Mrs. Roger (Lona) Lewis, Winlock, and a
nephew, Charles Hale, Mountlake Terrace.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Idlewild
Cemetery, Hood River Heights, Ore.

DEATH NOTICE OF JEROME WELLS
Jerome Wells, an old and highly respected resident of Pine Grove,
died April 1. Mr. Wells has been in poor health for the past few
years, but was not dangerously ill except during the week preceding
his death. The funeral was held Friday at the Pine Grove Church.
Rev. G. E. Heineck and Rev. J. W. Rigby officiating. Interment was
made at the Pine Grove Cemetery.
Surviving Mr. Wells are his widow, four sons and a daughter. They
are as follows: Mrs. J.D. Lester, Perry, Edward, Warren and
Clifford, all of Hood River with the exception of Warren who makes
his home at Aloha, Oregon. There also survives 9 grandchildren and
sisters, Mrs. M. E. Thomas of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and Mrs.
Emery Brock of Ovid, Colorado and a brother Charles of Kitscoty,
Providence of Alberta.
Mr. Wells was born in Logan County, Illinois, 60 years ago. His
marriage to Miss. Anna Mary Stricker occurred in 1876. They moved to
Hood River in 1891, at which time Mr. Wells took up a homestead near
Pine Grove. He had lived in that section every since and was highly
thought of by all of his neighbors and friends. He was a member of
the Methodist Church and had been an active member.
