UMPQUA COUNTY, OREGON
HISTORY AND GENEALOGY

Umpqua County, the twelfth county formed in Oregon, was formed January 24, 1851 from the southern portion of Benton County and the western portion of Lane County. Its name comes from the Umpqua River, which flows through the area, and from the Umpqua Indians. Umpqua County's area was steadily annexed to other counties. Douglas County was formed in 1852 from all of the land in Umpqua County lying east of the Coast Range. Coos County was formed in 1853 and annexed all of Umpqua County lying south of the Umpqua River. In the same year, Lane County was given the northern half of what remained of Umpqua County. Umpqua County survived into statehood, but was incorporated into Douglas County on December 16, 1862 and ceased to exist.
