Chamberlain, Jeremiah Chamberlain, Jeremiah, educator, college president, was born Jan. 5, 1794, near Great Conewago, Pa. In 1825 he accepted the presidency of Louisiana college at Jackson, La.; and in 1828 established an academy of his own in the same town; also organizing a presbyterian church there. In 1830 he became president of the newly founded Oakland college of Mississippi. He labored with great success for twenty years. He was stabbed to the heart by a student for some fancied grievance. He died Sept. 5, 1850, in Claiborne county, Miss.
