"GEORGE J. GROVE, farmer and stock-grower, P. O. Gettysburg, was born in Westminster, Carroll Co., Md., June 19, 1848, a son of Jacob and Mary (Harbod) Grove; the latter a native of Pennsylvania, of German descent. The father was born in Martinsburg, Va., March 31, 1790, of German descent. He was a son of Jacob, Sr., who was a native of Germany, a wheelwright (he spelled his name Groff instead of Grove). Jacob Jr., was also a wheelwright in early life, having learned his trade in Hanover, but later followed farming. He was twice married, George J. being the third child by the second wife. Our subject was educated at Westminster, Md.; has traveled over most of the western country, and for a time was engaged in agricultural pursuits on the farm left by his father, which consists of 130 acres. His mother is still living, and resides with him. In 1886, Mr. Grove married Amanda, daughter of Jacob Foot, a farmer; she is of German origin and a member of the Lutheran Church. Mr. Grove is a member of the United Brethren Church, and also a teacher in the Sunday-school. Politically, he is a Republican. "
