F. A. Hankey

"F. A. HANKEY, farmer and stock-grower, P. O. Gettysburg, was born in Cumberland Township, this county, March 6, 1836, a son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Shriver) Hankey, natives of Maryland and of German origin. Jacob was a farmer and also a cattle dealer and drover which occupation he followed for many years. His family consisted of eight children, F. A. being the fourth. Our subject’s early education was obtained at the common schools and later at Pennsylvania College, Gettysburg. He was reared on the farm and has followed agricultural pursuits, in which he has met with success. In 1863, he married Ellen C., daughter of Joseph Wible, of German origin. To Mr. and Mrs. Hankey the following named children were born: Joseph S. G., B. W., D. S., Elizabeth Rebecca A., and Willie Fred. Mr. and Mrs. Hankey are members of the Lutheran Church. He enlisted in 1863, in the One Hundred and Sixty-fifth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and served on detached duty most of the time. He entered the enemy’s line and was the first man to go through the enemy’s camp at Gettysburg and report to Gen. Meade what he saw. After the battle of Gettysburg he took charge of the hospital here until the close of the war."
