| Hapke, Catharine Dorthea Oeligarta | Departed this life on Thursday, Nov. 25, Mrs. Catharine Dorothea Oeligarta Hapke, aged 75 years, 5 months and 5 days. She bore the afflictions of her approaching disolution with Christian fortitude, and resignation in the will of God. As a Christian who had experienced the regenerating operations of the Holy Spirit, she, fully assured, of having received pardon for her sins by the intercession and merits of her glorious Redeemer, consigned her spirits into his hand. An aged consort bemoans, deeply, the departure of his companion of life, and the remaining children lament the loss of an affectionate Christian mother. - Communicated | 1 Dec 1819 | Republican Compiler Gettysburg, Pennsylvania | Nancy Piper |

| Himes, William A. | William A. Himes Expires Suddenly at Asbury Park The citizens of town and vicinity wer e startled on Thursday evening when a telegram was received here announcing the sudden death at Asbury Park, N. J., of Mr. William Alexander Himes, one of the town's most widely known citizens. His end was dramatic. Officiating as a judge of the famous annual baby parade of the sea shore resort he expired at the foot of the throne of her gracious majesty Queen Titinia VII in the presence of thousands of spectators. Mr. Himes had gone with his wife and several friends to Asbury Park, N. J. He had not only enjoyed a stay at that place last summer, but seemed to be much benefitted and had every reason to expect further benefit at this time, and he had passed a very pleasant and comfortable week, and had met many friends and acquaintances of last season. On Monday morning his son, son-in-law and three daughters arrived at the Park from an automobile tour to Berkshire Hites. It was a pleasant and complete family reunion. All its member were there. They were together, a family group was taken. It was the great day at Asbury Park. The great annual event, the Boley Carnival, for which preparations had been made for weeks and to which visitors always look dorward was to take place in the afternoon. He had been solicited to act as a judge. Any event that had children in it or concerned children was always of great interest to him. As he was apparently in good condition and in good spirits he consented to act. He had finished his lunch at the hotel, and set out leisurely accompanied by his son and a daughter and his friend Col., Frank O'Brion, of Birmingham, Alabama, for his position at the reviewing stand, expecting the rest of his family to follow. Everything went well. They were chatting, without reason to anticipate anything but pleasure, when suddenly he threw up his hand with a verbal exclamation of surprise, not of pain, and fell over into the arms of his son. Physicians were immediately summoned and two were soon on the spot, but life was extinct, and in their opinion death was intantaneous. The body was brought to his home in this place on the 6:01 train Friday evening. Deceased was a son of the late William D. and Magdalane Lanius Himes, and aged 56 years. He was born and reared in the Himes homestead. Cor. Center Square and Pitt Street, which he woned and occupied up to the time of his death. He was educated in the schools here. Then was at the old Moravian School at Nazareth, Pa., and from there went to the Moravian College at Bethlehem, and finished his course at Dickinson College from which he was graduated in 1871. He was always attached to his old Alma Mater. He preferred business to a profession, and quickly after leaving college engaged in the lumber and coal business here. After a few years this was abandoned for other business occupation. He took great pleasure in managing his several farms near town. He was united in marriage with Miss Kate W. Gitt, daughter of Abdiel F. Gitt well known in this community, and at this time its oldest citizen, on April 19, 1877. The surviving children are Anna K. wife of Robert E. Manley of York, and Amelia E., Helen M. and William D. all residing with the now widowed mother at home. Two brothers, Prof. Charles Himes, of Dickinson College, and one sister, Mrs. Helen Keith of Gettysburg, also survive him. At the organization of the Farmers and Merchants Bank in 1900, he was chosen president in which office he was continued until his decease. He was also President of the Emmitsburg and East Berlin R.R. Companies, and was a director of the York Trust company, Gettysburg Gas company, Hanover and McSherrystown Railway company, Hanover Light Heat and Power company, York and GEttysburg and Susquehanna and Yrok borough turnpike companies. He was a leading member of Hebron Lodge F. and M., and held numerous borough offices. The funeral was held at 11 a. m. Sunday, short services being held at the house after which the remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the New Oxford cemetery, Rev. W. W. Hartman officiating. Although the funeral was strictly private large numbers of friends from York, Emmitsburg, Gettysburg, Hanover and other places were here to pay their last respects. Many citizens lined the streets about the residence during the morning and their turn to have a farewell look at their departed friend and fellowman. The floral tributes were elaborate embracing at least a dozen beautiful and appropriate designs. The pall bearers were W. C. Sheely, Esq., and John L. Hill, Esq., of Gettysburg; Vincent Sebold, of Emmitsburg; C. J. Delone, Esq., and E. M. Fitzler, of Hanover, and J. E. C. Miller, of New Oxford. | 5 Sep 1907 Page 5 | New Oxford Item Gettysburg, Pennsylvania | Vicki Hartman |
