| Thompson, Joseph | "Distressing accident On Sunday last Joseph Thompson, who resided a few miles from this place, in Cumberland township, was found dead, a few rods from Marsh creek. A coroner’s inquest was called, whose verdict was “accidental death, occasioned by the cur of an axe”. The circumstances attending this unhappy affair, are supposed to be those. Mr. Thompson had been at a neighbors, chopping wood, and on Saturday evening tarried at a husking. On leaving the husking he took his axe with him, and in crossing the creek on some stones that formed a dam for a fish basket is supposed to have fallen on the axe, from which he received a most severe and fatal wound in the wrist. He was traced by the blood a distance of forty or fifty rods from the creek, over a very rough piece of ground, where he was found laying with his head on his leather apron, which he had taken off. It did not appear that he bled much after he laid down. He was accounted an industrious man, was the the 48th year of his age, and has left a wife and seven children to deplore the loss of a husband and father whose labor was their chief support.
