Resurrecting Old Bones
The remainder of the bodies are being removed from the old
Methodist buying ground on Edgmont Avenue, above St. Michael's Church, last week
several graves were opened and the bodies removed. Yesterday six bodies were
taken up and reburied at the Chester Rural Cemetery. Recently upon examining the
remains in one of the coffins a large quantity of jewelry was discovered, among
which was a solid gold head band that encricled(sic) the scull(sic) and a number
of valuable gold rings upon the skeleton hands. The coffins were, in several
instances in good and sound condition, while others fell apart while being
removed from the graves. (June 30, 1877 Chester Daily Times, Chester
Pennsylvania)
Chester Rural Cemetery
This cemetery which is located in the immediate vicinity of
Chester, is becoming quite a favorite resort on Sundays, and many persons who
have relatives interred there, do not forget to strew their graves with flowers
and evergreens, which has given that place quite an animated appearance.
Especially around the lake, the scenery presented is really picturesque. We were
surprised to see such a great change which a year had wrought. There are several
monuments in the cemetery, and one has just been erected by Mr. J.E. Burke, of
polished Kentucky marble, which is the handsomest we have seen for sometime. The
graves are all in good condition, which reflect much credit on the manager, Mr.
A.P. Garfield, who is willing at anytime to give whatever information persons
desire. There are only four vaults in the cemetery, but from what information we
can gather it will not be long before several more will be erected. The most
desirable location for the erection of vaults is along the slope running
parallel with the lake. Since the opening of the cemetery to December 30, 1876,
2380 persons have been interred. From December 30, 1876 to September 7, 1877,
inclusive, 167 have been interred, making a total of 2547 interments. The number
of interments have decreased this summer, and consequently deaths have been less
prevalent in this city, which is probably owing to the mild summer through which
we just passed. (September 10, 1877 Chester Daily Times, Chester Pennsylvania)
Blast Victims Are Buried
15,000 Mourn At Graveside in Chester Cemetery
Guards Hold Crowd Back
Fifty-two Unclaimed Victims of Eddystone Disastenr(sic) Laid in Great Trench as
Throng Looks On.
Chester, Pa., April 14,-"Ashes to ashes-dust to dust-"
Choking sobs contracted a thousand throats as the final,
measured sentences were being said at the burial of Eddystone's unidentified
dead.
Handfuls of earth thudded down on fifty-two caskets which lay in three tiers in
a great trench opened in Chester Rural cemetery.
A silk American flag covered each casket of the uppermost
tier. On the flags were flowers, who fragrance rose as the falling earth bruised
them.
Eleven clergymen officiated at the memorable services. Six of
them were Catholics. Other churches represented were the Episcopal, Lutheran,
Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist.
In the sorrowing throng assembled for the funeral of these
unidentified of the 130 dead of Tuesday's horror at the Eddystone Ammunition
corporation, occasional distressing cries of anguish went up.
A mother, knowing that among those shattered bodies, so
mercifully shielded from view, must be numbered that of an only daughter, sobbed
in despair on the should of her grief-bowed husband.
A wan-faced youth fell to his knees on the soggy turf. His
girl wife lay in that raw trench, somewhere. A woman, stooping, encricled him
with her arms, and herself burst into desperate weeping.
At the cemetery were police and guards from ammunition plants
in great number, to prevent confusion and possible disorder. Boy Scouts, awe
obvious in their faces, slipped here and there through the crowds.
A guard of honor was posted at the trench, the grave of these
unnamed dead. The guards was composed of 175 men from the Eddystone Ammunition
corporation, under Captain Hefferman, Captain Winebrenner, Captain Clearman and
Lieutenant Edward Greble.
During the night, to avoid depressing scenes on the streets,
the unclaimed bodies had been taken to the cemetery and laid in the trench,
which was thirty two feel long, twenty feet wide and thirty feet deep.
Fifty of the polished oak caskets, enclosed in cedar boxes,
which lay in the shadow of the country's colors, were numbered. but two were
not. In these two were not bodies, but mere fragments-pitiful tokens of that
terrific blast of shrapnel which accompanied Tuesday's explosion.
Bells for miles around were tolling as Rev. Thomas Ryan,
rector of the Catholic Church of St. Rose of Lima, Leiperville, opened the
services, assisted by five Catholic priests. Father Ryan sprinkled holy water on
the caskets, consecrating the community grave. he then said the Lord's Prayer.
This ended the Catholic ceremony.
Rev. C. Lee Gaul, pastor of Trinity Methodist Episcopal
church, began the service for the Protestant clergy, reading two verses from the
Scriptures. Rev. J.W. Hauser, of the Lutheran Church of Chester, read the
nineteenth Psalm. Rev. Robert A. Latham, Third Presbyterian church, Chester,
read the thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians.
The Apostles' Creed was recited by Rev. Francis F. Taitt,
rector of St. Paul's Episcopal church, Chester, and hundreds in the throng
recited it with him. Rev. H.M.B. Dare, pastor of the North Chester Baptist
church, read the committal service and pronounced the benediction. Previously he
had conducted a service at the works of the Eddystone corporation.
In all, there were thirty three clergymen at the services at
the grave, which occupied twenty-five minutes, but only those named above took
actual part in the ceremonies. (April 14, 1917 Tyrone Daily Herald, Tyrone
Pennsylvania)

Digging Up A Body After Thirty Years' Burial
In digging an extension of Linnaeus street through the
brewery of Hauck & Windisch, the workers have come upon more? than? one evidence
of the fact that the place, thirty of forty years ago, was a burying ground. It
was the German Lutheran Cemetery, known as St. Peter's or Hauser's Churchyard.
After taking out several barrels of bones, they found a small metallic coffin,
somewhat over two feet long, which though badly rusted, had held out very well.
The hinges of the small lid covering the glass were rusted through, and one
looking through the body of a child was found to be remarkable well preserved.
The eyes had sunk in, but the frilled white cap showed no signs of the ravages
of time. Whose body it was had not been determined, but as the graveyard has not
been used for nearly thirty years, the body must have laid there that length of
time. Should the air-tight case be opened the body would probably crumble.
(August 31, 1877 Chester Daily Times, Chester Pennsylvania)
