MARTIN, Anna Laura Franks - Age 82 years, of 307 North Burgess Ave., Columbus, Ohio, and formerly of Uniontown, Pa., died in the Mt. Carmel Hospital, of Columbus, Ohio, Friday. November 25, 1966, at 6:10 p.m. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. James (Betty J.) Donaldson. Columbus, Ohio; one step-daughter, Mrs. Carmella Anderson. Curtisville, Pa.; two sons, James Merle Martin, Hyattsville, Md., and William Martin, Jr., of Dayton, Ohio; two step-sons, Lucius Martin, Uniontown, and Earl Martin, Mesa, Arizona; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. I. W. Ross, Uniontown. She was a member of the Calvary Methodist Church, of Uniontown, the D. of A., and the Spanish American War Veterans Auxiliary, both of Uniontown. The family will receive friends Sunday after 7 p.m. and Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. In the Harold S. Gleason Funeral Rome, 114, E. Fayette St., where funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, November 29, at 1 p.m. Rev. Frank A. Bodnar will oifficate. Interment in Sylvan Heights cemetery.
Mrs. Sherwood Christy Martin, the former Evelyn Thompson, died at 7:15 last evening at her Friendship Hill home. She was 56 years old. Mrs. Martin was a daughter of the late Andrew A. and Lida Grim Thompson and granddaughter of the late J. V. Thompson, Uniontown banker and coal baron. A nationally known horsewoman, she was master of the Chestnut Ridge Hunt. She appeared in some of the most outstanding horse shows in the East. The Martin family owns historic Friendship Hill, the colonial home of Albert Gallatin, Secretary of the Treasury in the early days of the nation. Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband; one son, Sherwood C. Martin III of Oakdale; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Fredricka) Whiteside of Pittsburgh and Flora Belle, at home; two sisters, Mrs. James H. (Mary) Austin of Brinklow, Md., and Mrs. Henry G. (Fredricka) Thorndike of Wiconico Church, Md.; and two brothers, Josiah V. Thompson II of Havre de Grace, Md., and G. Markle Thompson of Uniontown. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Maykuth Funeral Home of Masontown. The family suggests contributions to the Heart Fund in lieu of flowers.
MARTIN, Marie Lott - Age 71 years of 208 N. Washington Street, Masontown, died Monday, January 24,1971 in the Uniontown Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Lee and Lulu Simkins Lott. She was born June 5, 1900 in Greene County, and was a member of the Masontown United Methodist Church, WSES and Delta Alpha of the Methodist Church, Ideal Chapter 213 OES, and Masontown Retired Teachers Association. She was a school teacher for 37 years in Nicholson Twp. Surviving are her husband, John Martin; one son, Jack, Pleasant Hills, Pittsburgh; one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Marlene) Billek, Fairfax, Va.; seven grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Mary Coffman, McClellandtown; one brother, Herbert Lott, Wheeling W. Va. Friends will be received in the Grant R. Townsend Funeral Home, Masontown, this evening 7 to 9 pm. and Wednesday, 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M. and Thursday until 2 p.m. the hour of service. Rev. H. MARTIN, William L. (Billy) - aged 77 of 92 Connellsville St., died in the U. S. Veterans Hospital, Aspinwall, Friday, April 14, 1950 at 9:30 p. m. He was a member and past commander of the United Spanish War veterans and a member of the Calvary Methodist Church, Jr. O.U.A.M., Red Men and Modern Woodmen. Surviving are his wife. Mrs. Anna L. Martin and these children, Earl W. of St. Clairsville, Ohio; John of Akron, Ohio; Mrs. Carmella Anderson of Curtisville; Lucius of Fair Oaks; Sgt. James with U. S. Air Corps. Washington. D. C.; Betty J. Donaldson of Colurnbus, Ohio; William J. of Dayton, Ohio; the brother and one sister James and Minnie Martin of Uniontown. Friends are being received in the Ferguson Funeral Home. 80 Morgantown St., where services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, April 18 at 2 o'clock with Dr. E. J. Keifer officiating. McCANN, MRS. Bessie Combs - aged 59 years, died at the home of her son, Albert McCann, Laurel Terrace, Wednesday evening, June 23, 1943, at 8:30 o'clock. She was the widow of the late L. Bentan McCann. Mrs. McCann was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church and Class 13 of that Sunday school. She is survived by her son, Albert, a daughter, Mrs. Thelma Nicholson, and one granddaughter. Two sisters and three brothers also survive: Miss Stella Combs of Upper Middletown, Mrs. J. H. Gillis, of Uniontown, Mahlon Combs, John Combs and Luther Combs of Upper Middletown. Friends are being received at the A. D. Ferguson Funeral Home. Services will be held there at 10:30 o'clock Saturday morning, June 26, in charge of Dr. James C. Clark of the Second Presbyterian Church, Uniontown, and Rev. W. S. Bingham of the Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery.

McCANN, J. Wayne (Jack) - Age 60 years Of 100 Ashcraft Court, Clarksburg, West Virginia died Sunday. December 19, 1971 at 4 p.m. in St. Mary's Hospital after an extended illness. He was born January 17, 1911 in McClellandtown the son of the late Harry L. and Gertrude Wolfe McCann. Surviving are his wife Am Humbertston McCann; his step-mother, Mrs. Lillian McCann., Scottdale; one son, Larry Wayne at home; one daughter, Mrs. Michael (Patricia Ann) Sturm, Bridgeport, W. Va.; a half sister, Mrs. Alva Jordan, West Alexander, Pa. Preceding him in death was one sister. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Friends will be received in the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main Street, Clarksburg, West Virginia until 10 a.m. Wednesday. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mark's Lutheran Church with Rev. Russell Riethmiller officiating. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery, McClellandtown. Brief graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. at the cemetery.
Prominent Member Of First Presbyterian Church - Mrs. Essie M. McCombs, aged 59, wife of Clark C. McCombs, died at 9:07 o'clock Monday night, September 30, 1940 at the family residence, 320 West Main street, after a several months' illness of a complication of diseases. She was born November 5, 1880 a daughter of the late W. C. John and Amy E. John, members of pioneer local families. Mrs. McCombs was a member of the Spence Bible Class of the First Presbyterian church. News of her death will be received with profound sorrow by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. In addition to her husband, she leaves three sons: Murrel C. McCombs, Arthur E. McCombs, and First Lieutenant John C. McCombs, of Clifton Forge, Virginia. She also leaves three grandchildren, and a sister and a brother, da M. Stouffer and Attorney Chad L. John, of Uniontown. Friends are being received at the family residence where services will be conducted at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Dr. William Blake Hindman, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, will be in charge. Arrangements are in charge of C. B. Dearth & Sons of New Salem.
McGEE, Elizabeth Riffle - wife of H. J. McGee, died in her home, 202 N. Main St., Masontown, Pa., Sunday, March 3, 1946 at 4:40 a.m. In addition to her husband she is survived by one brother Newton M. Riffle of Columbia, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Huhn and Mrs. J. A. Baer both of Masontown and a host of nieces and nephews. A sister, Mrs. Ellsworth Baker and two brothers, Charles and Delbert preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held. Wednesday, March 6, with brief services in the home at 2 p. m. and followed by additional rites in the Masontown Presbyterian church with Rev. R. J. Shields officiating. Burial will be made in St. Jacobs Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of the Honsaker Funeral Home, Masontown.

MCGILL, John H. - Age 64 years of McClellandtown, Pa. died suddenly Sunday, November 9, 1975 at his home. He was born in Monessen, the son of the late Harry and Katherine Cossell McGill. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Masontown, Pa., a World War II Veteran, UMWA Robena Local 6321 and McClellandtown Vol. Fire Co. Surviving are his wife, Alberta Ross McGill; a son, Lawrence N. McGill of Carlisle, Pa.; a daughter, Lucille McGill Constable of Sewickley, Pa.; a brother, Philip McGill of McClellandtown; a sister, Alma Miller of Carmichaels, Pa.; six grandchildren. McGINTY, Pearl Hostetler - Age 79, a resident of 7 Lydia Drive, South Union Township, died suddenly on Friday evening, March 8, 1974 at 7:45 p.m. in the Uniontown Hospital. She was a daughter of the late Edward and Harriet Crawford Hostetler, and was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Surviving are her husband, John F. McGinty; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Harriet) Steele of Uniontown and Mrs. James (Cathleen) Campbell of Ebensburg; sixteen grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren. Preceding her in death was one son, Dr. John F. McGinty, Jr., on May 6, 1973. Friends will be received in the Jerome W. Shell Funeral Home, 164 South Mount Vernon Ave., Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, time and place to be announced. Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park.
Emily Christopher MEREDITH, 56, of Poinsettia Dr., passed away in the hospital at 10:20 a.m. Mrs. Meredith was born in McClellandtown in 1912, the daughter of Thomas and Alberta Emery Christopher. Surviving are her husband, H. B. Meredith; two sons, Robert, Laughlintown; Richard, Evans City; a daughter, Sally, at home; and the following brothers and sisters, Mrs. J. E. (Ploy) Jackman, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Mrs. M. H. (Leona) Green, Reading, Charles Christopher, Gary, Ind.; Frank Christopeher, Tempe, Ariz.; J. B. and Theodore Christopher, McClellandtown. Mrs. Meredith was a teacher at Locust Grove, West Mifflin Twp., and a former teacher in German Twp. A member of Wesley United Methodist Church, McKeesport, she was also a member of Old Glory No. 270 Chapter Eastern Star, Ephesus Shrine No. 26, White Shrine of Jerusalem. Funeral services will be held in Craig Memorial House, McKeesport, at 1 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that a donation be made to the American Cancer Society.
MESSENGER, J. Holly - Age 63 years, of 3602 Edna Court, Tampa, Fla. and formerly of McClellandtown, the husband of Blanche Wilfong Messenger, died early Sunday morning, March 9, 1969 in Tampa. The son of the late R. Scott and Icie Townsend Messenger, he was born March 12, 1905 in Western, W. Va. He was employed as a mine foreman at the United States Steel Corp. in this area before his retirement. He was a member and elder of the Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, Tampa; a former member and church officer of the New Salem Presbyterian Church; and a former member of the New Salem Rotary Club and the Valley Lodge F & AM NO. 459 of Masontown. In addition to his wife, surviving are a son, James; two daughters, Mrs. James (Jane) Morris and Mrs. Robert (Carolyn) Dearth, all of Tampa, eleven grandchildren; a brother, Dale of Clearwater Beach, Fla.: and six sisters, Mrs. Mora Talbott and Mrs. Margie Schuessler, both of McClellandtown, Mrs. Eula Warman of Morgantown, W. Va., Mrs. Orris Schuessler of Masontown, Mrs. Hallie Kinlin of Pittsburgh, and Mrs. Goldie Means of Youngstown, Ohio. Friends are being received in the Duval Funeral Home, Tampa, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Forest Hills Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Lake Carroll Cemetery, Tampa, Fla.
A former area pastor, Rev. John 0. Miller Sr., 79, was injured fatally last Friday in a traffic accident near Grove City. Rev. Miller was backing from a private driveway on Mercer Rd. after making a call on an ill member of his church when his car was struck by another automobile. He died at 5:15 p.m. less than one hour after the accident, He was in the ministry 47 years. He had served as pastor of the Center United Presbyterian Church, Grove City, for the past 16 years, held the pastorate of Carmichaels Presbyterian Church from 1926 to 1945. He was a brother-in-law of Pearl and Anne Hughes, Fairchance, and uncle of A. N. Foster Jr., Uniontown. Rev. Miller was an alumnus of Mansfield, Ohio, High School Class of 1902 and was graduated from Princeton University in 1906 when the late President Woodrow Wilson was president of the university. He received his divinity degree in, 1916 from Western Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh, where he won the coveted Homoletic prize for his sermon on the theme, "Is the Young Man Absolem Safe?" He was a son of Rev. D. D. Miller, who served a pastorate in Jacob's Lutheran Church, German Twp. Surviving are a son, Rev. John O. Miller Jr., pastor of Saltsburg U. P. Church; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Betsy Jane) Orahood, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Gildas (Anne) Davies, Grove City; Mrs. William (Olive) Street, Rochester, Ind.; 12 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Mabel Willerton, Geneva, N. Y., Mrs. Mary George, Helen Miller, both of Lakewood, Ohio, and a brother, Dr. Dawson Miller, Brookville, Jefferson County. His wife, Jane Hughes Miller, preceded him in death in 1959 and a daughter, Mary Belle Miller Barr, in 1957. Friends will be received in Central U. P. MILLER, Olive Ross - Age 77 years of 207 N. Water St., Masontown, died Sunday evening, July 7, 1974 in the Fazio Nursing Home, Markleysburg. She was born July 31, 1896, the Clellandtown the daughter of Robert and Barbara Markley Ross. She was a member of the Masontown First Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Miller in 1955 and a brother, I. W. Ross. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Bernice Rockwell of Brownsville; a brother, Adam Ross Sr. of Oregon, Ohio. Friends will be received in the Grant R. Towsend Funeral Home, Masontown today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 10 p.m. and until Wednesday at 2 p.m. the hour of service. Rev. Howard Brown will officiate. Interment in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Uniontown.
MOLTON, Harry A. - Age 81 years of 10 Martha St., Uniontown, died Wednesday, June 5, 1974 in the Fazio Nursing Home, Markleysburg. He was a retired school teacher and former principal of the Gallatin School of Uniontown. He was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church and the John Knox Sunday School Class. Surviving are his wife, Nellie (Wilson) Molton; two sons, Harold T. Molton of Brookhaven, Pa., William A. Molton of Pittsburgh, Pa.; three grandchildren; a brother, Alva Molton of Greenville, Pa. He was predeceased by his parents Allan and Dora Lilley Molton. Friends are being received in the Jerome W. Shell Funeral HOme, 164 S. Mt. Mrs. Anna E. Moore, 89, died at her home on the Morgantown road near the Sycamore Tree, Monday afternoon, February 10, 1941, at 12:05 o'clock of a complication of diseases. Her husband, John W. Moore, and a daughter, Mrs. Lida Protzman, preceded her in death. Mrs. Moore made her home with a daughter, Mrs. Lavina Mossburg, who is her only immediate survivor. Funeral services will be held at the home Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Dr. Clarence W. Kerr of the Third Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery. Friends are asked to please omit flowers.
Mrs. Evarilla Langley Moore, 78, wife of Abraham Moore, died at the home in Hopwood, Sunday, January 17, 1932, at 10:20 a.m. Death was due to complications following a lingering illness. In addition to her husband she is survived by: two sons, Robert, at home, and Everd of the New Salem Road; one sister, Mrs. John Frost and two brothers, Charles and Alex Langley, all of Ralph; and three grandchildren. Mrs. Omer Bennett, Daytona Beach, Fla,, and Carl and Evarilla Moore, of Florida. Funeral services will be conducted at the family residence Tuesday afternoon at 2 O'clock in charge of Rev. R. L. Carraway, pastor of Hopwood Methodist church. Burial will be in the Moore cemetery near New Salem.
MOORE, William L. - Age 90 years, 11 months and 26 days died at 8:15 o'clock, August 17, 1946, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. P. Hackney of Luzerne Township near Hopewell church. Mr. Moore was born In German township. August 22, 1855 where he spent his entire life except for the past 3 years he spent with his daughter, Mrs. Hackney. He was a retired farmer and a member. of the Church HiII Presbyterian church. Besides his daughter he is survived by 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and 1 sister Mrs. Sarah Coffman of Uniontown. Friends are being received In the C. B. Dearth Son's Funeral Horne at New Salem where brief services will be held this afternoon followed by additional services in the Church Hill Presbyterian church in McClellandtown. Burial will follow In Church cemetery. Pallbearers: George P. McCombs, Everett Moore, Ira Coffman, James Moore, John Davison, Frank Coffman.
Mrs. Kathryn (Sutton) Morgan, 82, of 56 Water St., Smithfield, died today in Uniontown. Hospital. She was a retired school teacher, having taught for 47 years in Georges Twp., was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church for 50 years, and was a member and past president of Burdett Sunday School Class and superintendent of the children's department for more than 50 years. She served as church treasurer for 32 years, was dean of Smithfield Vacation Bible School for 38 years, and was a member of the Smithfield Golden Age and past president of the Smithfield American Legion Auxiliary. Born in Smithfield, she was the daughter of the late Ira and Elizabeth Dils Sutton. Surviving are her husband, Earl L. Morgan; and a brother, Charles Sutton of Smithfield. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Maude Pugh and Lucy Hittie, and two brothers, Jacob W. Sutton and Ewing R. Sutton. The family will receive friends in the John F. Brownfield Funeral Home, Smithfield, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, and until 2 p.m. Sunday, the hour of service, with Rev. Nelson Krute and Rev. MORRIS, David J. - Age 87 years of College Drive, McClellandtown, Pa. died Wednesday, April 14, 1976 at 8:30 a.m. in St. Johns Medical Center, Steubenville, Ohio. He was the son of the late Frank and Mary Ellen Bowers Morris. For 32 years he served as Secretary of the German Twp. School Board, and was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, McClellandtown and a life member of the Valley Lodge 459, F&AM, Masontown. He was predeceased by a daughter, Edith Ellen, and two brothers, Sam and George Morris. Surviving is his wife, Grace Grove Morris; the following children, David R. Morris, Bel Air, Md., Mrs. Robert (Rita) McCombs, Miami, Florida, and William G. Morris, Steubenville, Ohio; six grandchildren; two brothers, John E. Morris, McClellandtown, and William E. Morris, Brownsville; three sisters, Mrs. Walter (Lena) Harford, McClellandtown, Mrs. Paul (Margaret) Phelan, Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Lee (Gay) Clark, Detroit, Michigan. MORRIS, MRS. Hazel McCombs - aged 67, McClellandtown, died suddenly, Wednesday, February 9, 195? at 4:30 p.m. She was the daughter of the late James C. and Ella Vincent McCombs. She Is survied by her husband, John E. Morris; one son James M., McClellandtown; one granddaughter, Kathleen Morris. She was predeceased by two brothers, Jewell R., and Robert R. McCombs. MOSER, Samuel G. - Age 77 years, of Liberty St., Smithfield, died Saturday evening, April 25, 1970 in his home. The son of the late John Henry and Sabina Brown Moser, he was born February 26, 1893 at Adah. Surviving are his wife, Jessie Shaffer Moser; three children, Mrs. Darwin (Ruth) Wise of Smithfield, Dr. Jesse L. Moser of Masontown, and Ray Edwin Moser of Smithfield; ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren: and a sister, Mrs. George Deffenbaugh of Smithfield. A veteran of World War I, he was a member of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, the Mens Bible Class, the American Legion post No. 278 of Smithfield, the Disabled American Veterans of Uniontown, a charter member and past president of the Smithfield Rotary Club., and a honorary member of the Smithfield Vol. Fire Department. Friends will be received in the James B. Vance Funeral Home, Smithfield today and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday until 2 p.m., the hour of service with Rev. Paul Tarcy officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Moriah Baptist Cemetery.
MOSSBURG, Lavina (Moore) - Age 93 years, of Uniontown R. D. 3, died Sunday evening, November 24, 1974 at 10:30 p.m. at the Uniontown Hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Nicholson Twp. February 24, 1881, a daughter of the late John William and Anna Carson Moore. She was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church of Uniontown, and was one of its oldest members at the present time, She was a former graduate of the Music School of West Virginia University and in her earlier life she gave private music lessons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Mossburg, June 21, 1967. She is survived by a nephew, Theodore (Ted) Morton of Smithfield. MURPHY, Frank - Age 79 years, of McClellandtown, died in the West Virginia University Medical Center, Sunday, March 9, 1969 at 8 p.m. He was born in West Overton, Pa. October 5, 1889, the son of the late Jacob R. and Malinda Grimm Murphy. He is survived by one son, Frank Murphy Jr. of Cheswick, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. Ray (Carolyn) Messenger of West Granby, Conn.; Mrs. Kenneth (Marie) Halberstadt of Rockford, Ill.; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Mary Murphy of McClellandtown with whom he made his home. He was predeceased by four brothers, Jacob. Daniel, Elmer and George Murphy; also by two sisters, Mrs. William (Lavina) Richter, and Mrs. William (Harriet) Walsh Soles. He was a member of the UMWA, District 4, Local 6326. Friends will be received in the T. NEWCOMER, Basil S. - Age 80 years, died Thursday, September 5, 1974 at his home on Blaine Ave., McClellandtown. He was the son of the late Basil Newcomer and Ella Rider Newcomer. He was a life-time resident of McClellandtown. His life was devoted to teaching school in German and Redstone Township and was a former school director. NEWMAN, Andrew E. - Born May 4, 1886, he died at the age of 82 years in the Shawlley Nursing Home, Youngstown, Pa. at 9:25 p.m., December 4, 1968. He was a former well known resident of McClellandtown and was a member of McClellandtown Vol. Fire Dept. Messmore Rod and Gun Club, a member of Valley Lodge, 458, F. & A.M.. Masontwon; a member of the Uniontown Lodge of Perfection and a member of the Consistory of Pittsburgh. He was a former employee of the H. C. Frick and U. S. Steel Co. as a surveying engineer. He made his home with a daughter, Mrs. Jack N. (Wilma) Newman Wood of 134 Manchester Drive, Irwin, Pa. NICHOLSON, William C. - Age 78 years, of R.D.2, Smithfield, Pa., died Wednesday, July 22, 1981, in the Uniontown Hospital. He was born January 17, 1903, in Smithfield, Pa., R.D., and was the son of the late G. W. and Nancy Core Nicholson. He was a lifelong resident of the Smithfield area. NIXON, MISS Janet Hale - Age 69 years, of High House St., Smithfield, died suddenly Wednesday, June 24, 1970 in her home. PETERS, DR. Edwin S. - Age 60 years of 610 N. Main St., Masontown, died April 8, 1975 in the Uniontown Hospital. He was a General Practitioner in the Masontown area since 1940. He was a graduate of W.Va. University, and the Northwestern Medical School. He served his internship at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Pennsylvania Medical Association, Fayette County Medical Association. He was a member of the Staff of the Uniontown Hospital, and was a member of the Masontown American Legion and the VFW, BPOE, Uniontown, and the Pittsburgh Athletic Association (PAA). He was a Veteran and Captain in World II. Surviving are his wife; Jane F. Peters; the following children, Stephen A. Peters, Uniontown, David Peters, Pamona, Cal., and Joanne Pillinger, Park City, Utah; four grandchildren; the following brothers and sisters, Mrs. Mildred Brain, Masontown, Dr. Jerome F. Peters, Bethesda, Md., Dr. Robert J. Peters, Uniontown, Kenneth J. Peters, Holly, Michigan, and Dr. Richard C. Peters, Camp Hill, Pa. He was predeceased by his mother, Agnes A. Alyce Riffle of Adah, died at her residence yesterday at the age of 58. She was the daughter of the late Earl A. and Edith I. Snyder of Elizabethtown. She was a member of Jacobs Lutheran Church and an officer in the children's Sunday School Class. She was also past matron of the Eastern Star, Uniontown Laurette Chapter No. 178, Margaret E. Caven Shrine No. 42 and an active member of the PTA, Band Mothers and other civic affairs in Adah. Surviving are her husband, Harry E. Riffle and the following children: Lt. Comm. Earl R. Riffle, Lt. Ronald K. Riffle and Lt. Donald L. Riffle, all in the U. S. Navy; two granddaughters. Dr. George Newcomer Riffle of McClellandtown, a practicing physician in that community and Fayette County for 42 years, died yesterday in Uniontown Hospital following a brief illness. Dr. Riffle was born at McClellandtown July 30, 1897, a son of the late Edward H. and Emma Newcomer Riffle. He attended German Twp. schools and West Virginia University, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta. After graduating from Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia in 1922, Dr. Riffle interned at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Phi Rho Sigma Medical Fraternity at Jefferson. The McClellandtown native was a member of the American Medical Assn., Pennsylvania State Medical Society, and the Fayette. County Medical Society, where he served as president in 1952. Dr. Riffle was the physician at German Twp. High School the past 26 years. Survivors include his wife, Nola K. Moore Riffle: and four children, Dr. George N. Riffle, II, resident physician in Urology at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia; Kathryn Louise Riffle, instructor in nursing at Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio: Dr. John Edward Riffle, a captain in the U. S. Army Medical Corps serving as a flight surgeon in Korea Robert M. Riffle, a graduate student at West Virginia University, one granddaughter, Susan Kathryn Riffle, Philadelphia: one half- brother, Ray Riffle, McClellandtown. Friends will be received in the T. Jnallen Riffle, a veteran merchant of Uniontown and McClellandtown, died at his home in McClellandtown, Sunday morning, March 23, 1941 at 4:30 o'clock of a complication of diseases. He was born in German township, May 29, 1886 the son of the late William A and Melissa Coffman Riffle and spent virtually his entire life in the vicinity of McClellandtown. He was a member of the Jacobs Lutheran Church, Aeria 828 of Eagles in Uniontown and Jr. 0. U. A. M. Council No. 74 of McClellandtown. He married Oma B. Pike of Uniontown on February 6, 1917. She and a daughter, Jean survive. An infant died in 1919. Two sisters, Mrs. William Hartley, and Mrs. John S. Fuller of Carmichaels, also survive. Friends are, being received at the family residence. ROCKWELL, John R. - Age 53 years of R.D.1, Pt. Marion was dead on arrival at Veteran's Hospital, Pittsburgh Saturday, November 27, 1971. He was born April 28, 1918 in Nicholson Township the son of the late William and Jane Williams Rockwell. He was a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife Loretta Davis Rockwell; one daughter, Marsha Lynn, at home; four brothers, Brown and Glenn, both of Masontown, Lloyd of Fairchance and Wendell of Uniontown, R.D.; one sister, Mrs. Harry (Martha) Gray, Nemacolin. SANGSTON, Bessie Marie - Age 88, a resident of McClellandtown, died in the Laurel Rest Home on Monday, November 11, 1974 at 12:15 a.m. She was a daughter of the late John W. and Mary Jane Lowe Kennison of Haydentown, and was a member of the Free Methodist Church, McClellandtownn, and Colonel Andrew Lynn Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. Preceding her in death was her husband, Horace G. Sangston, in 1964. Surviving are one son, J.P. Sangston; one granddaughter, Mrs. Dolores Garriss, and one greatgrandson, Steven S. Dr. J. Holmes Sangston, 77, a McClellandtown physician for more than 50 years, died suddenly Wednesday, Nov. 7, 1956, in Uniontown Hospital. Born in Masontown, Dr. Sangston was a son of Dr. and Mrs. James P. Sangston. He served 35 years on the German Twp. School Board, was a member of the Fayette County, the State of Pennsylvania and American Medical Societies. He also was a Master Mason, holding membership in Franklin Lodge 221, Pittsburgh; Uniontown Lodge of Perfection, Pennsylvania Consistory of Pittsburgh and the Shrine. He also had been president of the Eberly Coal and Coke Co. several years. Dr. Sangston was a graduate of West Virginia University and established offices in McClellandtown immediately after his graduation from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School in 1903. He was a member of the Phi Rho Sigma Fraternity and the Presbyterian Church of McClellandtown. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Evelyn Leonard Sangston; one son, Thomas Leonard Sangston McClellandtown; two daughters, Mrs. Fredric (Virginia) Jussen, West Chester, and Mrs. John H. Robert W. Sesler of Houston, Tex., formerly of Uniontown, died Saturday in Methodist Hospital, Houston, Tex. He was 49. Mr. Sesler was assistant plant manager for Union Carbide in Texas City, Tex. at the time of his death. He joined Union Carbide after receiving his bachelor of science degree from West Virginia University. A veteran of World War II, he received his honorable discharge from the U. S. Army in November, 1956. His first Union Carbide assignment was as a staff engineer in plant shipping operations to improve and modernize distribution facilities and function in South Charleston, W. Va. A study he developed in South Charleston led to his patent of a manual drum filling device with fume exhaust and drip control. From January, 1959 to June, 1961, Mr. Sesler was department head of shipments and planning. From 1961 to 1965 he was department head of bulk materials handling and responsible for management of barge and river operations and the North Charleston bulk terminal. In September, 1970 Mr. Sesler transferred to the Texas City plant as distribution superintendent. In March, 1974 he was appointed assistant manager of the Texas City plant. He is survived by his wife, Bette Lee Hunt Sesler; the following children: Robert W. Jr. of Albuquerque, N.M.; Cindy of Washington, D.C.; David of Tucson, Ariz., and Susan, at home; his parents, Louis and Catherine Sesler of Uniontown; a sister, Mary Catherine, also of Uniontown. He was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Sesler Harris in January, 1973. Memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m. today in Nassau Bay Baptist Church, Houston, Tex. Funeral services will be held Wednesday for James Russell Sessler Jr., who died yesterday in Uniontown Hospital at the age of 52. Mr. Sessler was minister of music at the Third United Presbyterian Church of Uniontown, and director of the Men's Glee Club and college organist at California State College. He resided on Braddock Ave., Uniontown. He was also the former minister of music at the New Salem United Presbyterian Church, Christ Methodist Church of Uniontown, Church of the Brethren of Uniontown, and the Fairchance United Presbyterian. Church. Mr. SessIer was past president of the Uniontown Music Club, a member of the Assn. of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, the Fayette City Christian Endeavor Board and a member of the board of the Uniontown YMCA. He was also a music teacher in the former Fairchance Georges School District and taught private piano and organ. He had earned an associate in the American Guild of Organists and was also a tour leader for the Men's Glee Club and other groups taking them to Hawaii, Russia and European countries. Mr. Sessler was a graduate of Uniontown High School with the class of 1943, a graduate of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Ill., attended Waynesburg College, received his bachelor of music degree at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. He earned his master of music degree at West Virginia University having studied with Dr. Clyde English and was presently coaching in organ with G. Logan McElvany of Pittsburgh. Born in Uniontown, Mr. Sessler was the son of the late James Russell Sr. and Mary Gray Sessler. Surviving are his wife, Clarissa Dally Sessler; a daughter, Amy Ruth; a brother, Donald G. of Uniontown, and two nephews. SHUSS, Samuel W. - Age 85 years, of R.D. 1, Breezewood, Pa. died July 28, 1974 in Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born November 12, 1888 in Bedford County, son of the late Daniel H. Shuss and Maria Smively Shuss. He was married to Zola Felton on August 27, 1924. She survives along with these children: Mrs. Bernice S. Peterson, Sr. of Dickenson, Texas; John R. Shuss of Bethesda, Md.; Mrs. Alice S. Malone of Springfield, Va.; also surviving are five grandchildren. Mr. Shuss was a school teacher and prior to his retirement in 1952 he had taught 30 years at German Twp. High School in McClellandtown. He was a veteran of World War I, and was a past master of F & AM of Masontown. While living in McClellandtown, he was on the Board of Elders of the Church Hill Presbyterian Church. SMART, Marguerite T. - Age 83 years, of Fayette Bank Building, Uniontown, Pa., passed away in the Uniontown Hospital Thursday, December 12, 1974 at 11:40 p.m. She was the daughter of the late George W. and Anna Hoar Smart. She was a retired piano teacher and a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Grace S. Choate, with whom she made her home; one nephew, Homer D. Choate, Largo, Florida. Friends will be received in the Edward E. Minerd Funeral Home, 196 W. Main St., Uniontown, Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Sunday until 2 p.m., the hour of service, with Rev. Russell Turner officiating. Interment in Sylvan Heights Cemetery.
SMELL, Glenn C. - Age 73 years of McClellandtown, died Friday, September 12, 1980 in the Uniontown Hospital. He was born April 8, 1907 in German Twp., the son of the late Claude and Melinda (Shoaf) Smell. He was a retired agent for the American General Insurance Co., Hostetler's Jewelers and a butcher for the Palmer Union Supply Co. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, McClellandtown and the Silver Threads. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Harriet) Christopher, McClellandtown; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Jack (Mabel) Hostetler, Uniontown, Mrs. Clark (Ethel) Reahard, McClellandtown and Mrs. George (Opal) Jubin, New Salem. He was predeceased by one son, James C. Smell, on February 24, 1976 and one sister, Edna Smell, on March 4, 1978. Friends will be received in the T. Leonard Sangston Funeral Home, McClellandtown, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and Monday until 2 p.m., the hour of service, with Rev. Raymond C. SMELL, James C. - Age 42 years of McClellandtown, Pa., died Tuesday, February 24, 1976 at 4 p.m. at his home. He was born in Continental 2 and was the son of Glenn and Ruth Smell, McClellandtown. Surviving are two children, Kenneth James, and Karen Lynn, both of Uniontown; a sister, Mrs. Donald (Harriett) Christopher, McClellandtown. He was employed with the American General Life Insurance Company, District of Uniontown. He was a member of Christ Methodist Church, Uniontown, organist for the Brethren Church, Masontown, organist with the Impala's Orchestra, and a member of the Life Underwriter's Assn. Friends will be received in the T. Leonard Sangston Funeral Home, McClellandtown, today 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday until 2 p.m., the hour of service. Rev. Charles L. SMELL, Jacob P. - Age 65 years of 18 Orchard Lane, died Wednesday, April 10, 1974 in the Uniontown Hospital at 11:05 a.m. He was born at German Twp., Pa., March 12, 1909 the son of the late Clyde and Mary Poundstone Smell. He was a member of the Third United Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Session and the John Knox Bible Class. He was a retired businessman and owner of the J.P. Smell Tire Service and the Jacob P. Smell Truck Brokerage for Cooper Jarrett Corp. Surviving are his wife, Mignon Nelson Smell; a daughter, Mrs. Janet Chambers of Uniontown; three brothers, Ewing and Edwin both of Balsinger, Pa. and Frank of Farmington; two sisters, Mrs. Alvin (Betty) Harbaugh of Rockville, Md. and Miss Catherine Smell of Balsinger; five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joanne Smell Edenfield on August 11, 1973. Friends will be received in the Andrew D. Ferguson Funeral Home, 80 Morgantown St. after 7 this evening and Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and until Saturday at 11 a.m. and in the Third Presbyterian Church from 1 to 2:30 p.m. the hour of service. Rev. Karl W. Bowman Jr. will officiate. Internment in the Church Hill Cemetery, McClellandtown. The John Knox Class will hold services Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Mrs. Mary Malinda Smell, 67, died at her home in McClellandtown, Sunday afternoon, January 18, 1942 at 1:45 o'clock following a two months' illness of complications. Mrs. Smell was born October 24, 1874 in Georges township the daughter of the late James R. and Harriet Newcomer Shoaf. She was a member of the Smithfield Baptist Church for a number of years but at the time of her death was a member of the Grace Chapel Presbyterian Church of High House. Surviving are her husband Claude L. Smell, the following children, Edna Smell at home; Mrs. Opal Jubin of New Salem; Glenn Smell of Palmer; Mrs. Ethel Rechard and Mrs. Mabel Hostetler of Uniontown; three grandchildren, Harriet Louise and James Smell and Donald Jubin. Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Thomas B. Shoaf of Masontown; James C. Shoaf of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Alda T. and John H. Shoaf of Smithfield; Frank N. Shoaf of Unioniown; Smith R. Shoaf of Williamstown, W. Va.; Mrs. Daisy Durr of Leetonia, O.; Nancy Shoaf of Smithfield; Mrs. Matilda Bixler of South Uniontown and Mrs. Ruth Baer of Akron, O. Funeral services will be held at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. David Hunter will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Uniontown under the direction of T. L. Sangston of McClellandtown.
SMITH, Bryan H. - Age 69 years of High House, died early Wednesday morning, April 27, 1966 in the Uniontown Hospital. He was born August 11, 1896 in High House the son of the late Isaac and Matty Lieb Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Davis Smith in 1960. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Hazel) Slabaugh, Masontown, R.D.; two sons, Charles P. of Uniontown, R.D. 4, E. Dale Smith of Youngstown, Ohio; six grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Bessie Reed of Charleroi, Mrs. Ollie Butler of Murraysville, Mrs. Mary Jane Kindler of Irwin, R. D.; Mrs. Albert Chalfont of Hialeah, Fla., Mrs. Nan Peach of Miami, Fla. Friends will be received in the Andrew D. Ferguson Funeral Home, 80 Morgantown St. today from 7 to 10 p.m. and on Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 10 p.m. and until Saturday, April 30 at 1:30 p.m. the hour of service with Rev. Raymond Barner of the Walnut Hill Methodist Church officiating. Interment in the Walnut Hill Cemetery.
SMITH, Hazel (Franks) - Age 85 years of 29 Highland Ave., Uniontown, Pa., died in Uniontown Hospital Aug. 29, 1985 at 9: 10 p.m. She was the daughter of the late Andrew J. and Mary E. Coffman Franks. Surviving are a sister, Ruth Ann Dillon of Stowe, Vt.; and a brother, Weldon Franks of Uniontown R.D. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; a brother, Clinton Franks; and two sisters, Mildred David and Nellie Mae Franks. She was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church, Uniontown, Fayette, Pennsylvania and National Retired Teachers' Association and Col. Andrew Lynn Chapter of D.A.R. She taught school for 41 years in the German Township School District, retiring in 1961. The family will receive friends in the James W. He was born in Canton, South Dakota the son of the late J.D. and Janie Maxwell Springer. He was a life long farmer, and a deacon and elder of the McClellandtown United Presbyterian Church and a member of Light and Law Sunday School Class. a member of the Union Grange No. 1103, and chairman of A.S.C.S., a member of Pennsylvania Farmer's Association, a director of Southwestern Mutual Fire Insurance, and a member of the Atlantic Breeders Association and past president of the Agriculture Extension Association. He was predeceased by two brothers, Alfred Springer December 25, 1974 and J. D. Springer, Jr. April 30,1976. He was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church, a veteran of World War I; a member of Dover Lodge No. 489, F&AM. He was a terminal manager for the Atlantic Freight Line. He is survived by his wife, Verna Bryson Strine; three step - children, Mrs. Ted (Eleanor) Lemon of Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. Harold (Leona) Ford of Atlanta, Ga.; Wayne VanBremen of Massillon, Ohio. STROSNIDER, Alice L. McCracken - Age 84, a resident of 10 Liberty St., Smithfield, died following a lingering illness on Saturday, June 15, 1974 in Mount St. Macrina Nursing Home, Uniontown. She was born March 23, 1890 at Cameron, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Dr. John C. and Mary Lazear McCracken. She was a retired schoolteacher, and a member of local, state, and national teachers' associations. She was also a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Uniontown, Sunday School and Missionary Society, College Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Daughters of the American Revolution, and American University Women, In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Floyd S. Strosnider, in 1919, and one brother, Dr. J. Lazear McCracken, in 1953. Surviving are a nephew, Dr. Robert L. McCracken of Nashville, Tennessee, and a number of other nieces and nephews. Friends will be received in the Vance-Brownfield Funeral Home, Smithfield, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Tuesday until 11 a.m., the hour of service, with Rev. Thomas R. Thomas, pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Green Mount Cemetery, Waynesburg.
SUTTON, Jacob W. (Jake) - Age 78, a resident of 20 Washington Way, Smithfield, died in his home on Saturday, November 2, 1974. He was born at Smithfield on February 29, 1896, a son of the late Ira and Elizabeth Dils Sutton. He was former postmaster for Smithfield for thirty-four years, and a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and Sunday School, I.O.O.F. Lodge 517, Smithfield, and a lifetime member of B.P.O. Elks, Uniontown. Surviving are his wife, Essey M. Strickler Sutton; one son, William Ira Sutton of Birmingham, Michigan; three grandchildren, Peter M. of Croston , Maryland; Mrs. William (Pamela) Greenwood of Seattle, Washington, and Scott G. of Birmingham, Michigan; two great - grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Earl (Catherine) Morgan of Smithfield; two brothers, Charles and Ewing, both of Smithfield. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, and will be announced ater by the Vance-Brownfield Funeral Home, Smithfield.
