James Ackley (Army serial No. 49505), private, Company A, 23d Infantry. 2d Division. For extraordinary heroism in action near Chateau-Thierry, France, June 6, 1918. Even after he had been painfully wounded, Pvt. Ackley remained on duty during the attack, performing his mission as runner until ordered to the dressing station by his commanding officer.
