Congressional Medal of Honor & Distinguished Service Cross & Distinguished Service Medal Issued by the War Department, 1919

James Ackley (Army serial No. 49505), private, Company A, 23d Infantry. 2d Division. For extraordinary heroism in action near Chateau-Thierry, France, June 6, 1918. Even after he had been painfully wounded, Pvt. Ackley remained on duty during the attack, performing his mission as runner until ordered to the dressing station by his commanding officer. Residence at enlistment: Siegel, Pa.


George J. Shirely, private, Section No. 585, Ambulance Service. During the fighting near Soissons, France, July 21, 1918, he drove his ambulance through shell fire and continued on after his car was badly shattered until he had delivered his patients to a dressing station, when he fainted from serious wounds in his left arm and both legs, the existence of which he had concealed when the ambulance was hit. Residence at enlistment: 20 Pickering Street, Brookville, Pa.
