The New Wilmington Globe has the following history of Henry Means, who died in Wilmington township on Sunday, March 12. "He settled in this section near the place where he died, with his father in 1800

Going back to 1797, we find Wm. Hodge was the first white man to settle in this vicinity, on the place now owned by Christ. Fulkman, where he remained one year and then moved to the farm of B. R. Wilson.

In 1798 Mr. John McCrumb settled on the farm owned by the Pomeroy heirs, and James Hezlep settled where Geo. Dice now lives, and in 1800 Henry Mean s' father settled on the flat just over the mill race and built the mill, "Henry" being considerable of a boy at that time. Thus it will be seen that he was the oldest settler in this section, and with the exception of Mrs. Ferre, of Wilmington township, who is a few months older, the oldest resident in this section. Even when a boy he was not considered stout and rugged as boys were in those days, and none who saw him thought he would live to see nearly a century of life. His life was passed in this vicinity, quiet and inoffensive, and he never was without friends. Up to the time of his death, we believe, his memory was good. He was the father of eight children, only two of whom are living. Pages could be written of the changes in country and people, since uncle Henry Means first put his foot upon the soil. He lived to see a generation grow up and pass away. John McCrumb is still living in Greene township, Mercer county, and a daughter of James Hezlep, Mrs. Templeton, of Mercer, are the only people now living who were in this county when Mr. Means came here, and they were children together. Mr. McCrumb is, we believe, about 88, and Mrs. Templeton about the same age."

Zenas W. McConahy, a prominent citizen and representative agriculturist of Pulaski Township, operating his own farm of 155 acres, and that of his wife, which contains ninety acres, was born in Pulaski Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, March 15, 1851, and is a son of John and Martha C. (Smith) McConahy.

The McConahy family is of Scotch extraction and it was founded in Western Pennsylvania by Robert McConahy, the grandfather. He was a pioneer in Pulaski Township and when he came had to clear a site in the big woods on which to build his log cabin. There he reared his family and lived to the end of his days.

The father of Zenas W. McConahy, Rev. John McConahy, was one of the best known, respected and beloved men in his time in this section. He was born in the little log cabin, grew up amid pioneer surroundings and spent his life visiting widely separated communities, traveling on horseback and performing the duties of a pastor of the Baptist Church. He had settled charges at Hillsville, Sharon and other places, but calls came to him which he never disregarded, to visit many a lonely cabin and isolated farm. He died from an attack of typhoid fever, in his forty-seventh year. He was a strong Abolitionist in his earlier years and later was a stanch supporter of the Republican party. He married Martha C. Smith, who was born at Columbus, Ohio, and two of their children survive: Mary V., who is the wife of John F. Mitchell, of Pulaski Township, and Zenas W.

Zenas W. McConahy was reared to manhood in Pulaski Township and there was mainly educated. On June 12, 1879, he was married to Mary E. Fulkman, who was born in Pulaski Township, June 3, 1860. She is a daughter of John N. and Jane (Paden) Fulkman, the former of whom was born in Pulaski Township and the latter in Beaver County, Pennsylvania John N. Fulkman died November 27, 1907, but his widow survives and is a beloved member of Mr. McConahy's family. The grandfather of Mrs. McConahy was Christopher Fulkman, who was born in Germany. He was a well educated man both in German and in English, and later held office in Pulaski Township. He married Sarah Standly, who was of English extraction, and had relatives in the ranks of the English nobility.

Mr. and Mrs. McConahy have had four children, namely: Rose M., who is deceased; Chauncey F., John Q., and Maud L., who is the wife of Herbert Hoover and resides at New Castle. Mr. and Mrs. McConahy are members of the Pulaski Presbyterian Church. In politics he is a Republican. He belongs to the order of the Knights of Maccabees, at Pulaski.

Centreville, known to the post office department as Slippery Rock, and to the old settlers as "Ginger Hill," was surveyed, in 1824, by David Dougal. on a part of the Stephen Cooper farm. Stephen Cooper, a brother of Nathaniel Cooper, was living in 1800 upon the tract of land settled by the latter in 1798, in what is now Slippery Rock township borough was incorporated in 1841; but for thirty-six years little was accomplished by the councils toward raising the village above the condition of a country hamlet.

The old records are not in possession of the clerk, but from the records in the county offices the following names of burgesses and councilmen were obtained.

A Pleasant Wedding

A very pleasant wedding took place last Wednesday evening, July 1st, at the residence of Mr. John N. Fulkman, of Nashua station, Pulaski Township. The contracting parties were Mr. John William Cooper, of Mahoning towns hip, and Miss Della Gortney Fulkman, adopted daughter of Mr. Abram S. Fulk man, of Wellsville, Ohio. The ceremony was performed at 8 o’clock p. m. by Rev. J. P. Irwin, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Pulaski. It was solemnized in the presence of about 35 Invited guests, relatives of the bride and groom. Miss Kate Moore, of New Castle, and Mr. Frank Cooper acted as bridesmaid and groomsman. After the congratulations to the happy young couple the company were invited out to the dining-room where an elegant supper awaited them. Three tables were set, and the plentiful supply of good things were amply appreciated. It would be impossible to describe the supper in appropriate language, for it was an immense affair. After supper the presents received by the bride were duly Inspected. Many handsome, costly and useful articles were presented by loving friends. The presentation address was made by the pastor, and responded to by one of the bride's brothers. The affair was held the following day at the residence of the groom's mother. This promising young couple start out in life with the sincere wishes of a host of friends.

14. WILSON STANLEY4 FULKMAN (ABRAHAM S.3, CHRISTOPHER2, CHRISTIAN1) was born December 07, 1854 in Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. He married RUTH EMMA MCDANEL FIELD December 26, 1878 in Lawrence Co., Pennsylvania. She was born 1851 in Pennsylvania.

HISTORY OF BEAVER COUNTY PAPERS

Wilson Stanley Fulkman was bom December 7, 1854, in Allegheny county, Pa., his boyhood days being mostly spent on a farm. His education was secured in the public schools and the State Normal School Edinboro, Pa. He learned the trade of printer at New Castle, Pa., with Wm. S. Black and with the "Courant" of that city, and wrote local news items during his connection with them. He returned to his home at Centreville, Pa., where he started the "Centreville Casket" in the spring of 1877, which had a fitful existence of two years. He was married to Miss Ruth E. McDanel of North Sewickley township, Beaver county. Pa., December 26, 1878, and moved to New Brighton October 15, 1879.

He had been promised a situation on the "Beaver Falls Courier'' but arrived too late, and he went to work on the "Beaver Valley News" as solicitor, and later he was one of the compositors, combining with it the gathering of local news, soliciting and collecting, working on the paper from time to time until the winter of 1883, in January of that year assisting in securing subscribers for the "Daily News." In the spring of 1882 he started the "Beaver Falls Index," there being then four weekly papers in the town, and the new paper died after twelve issues. During the years 1885 to 1886, he again was employed on the "Tribmie" as foreman and reporter.

On August 31, 1887, W. S. Fulkman went to Darlington, Pa., where he took notes of the services attending the dedication of the soldiers' monument at that place. Returning to his home in New Brighton he wrote a very full accoimt of the dedication, which, together with a picture of the monument, formed the chief feature in the first number of a new paper he had decided to publish.

This paper was called "Spray of the Falls," and was issued monthly, the first number coming out in September, 1887. It took with the people from the start.

The "Spray of the Falls" went to the townships and villages for its support, and made itself popular in those sections by publishing the local news of each neighborhood where it circulated. It also secured some circulation in Beaver Falls and New Brighton, and by the end of its first year had 1,035 actual paid subscribers, every one of which had been secured personally by Mr. Fulkman. In addition to securing the circulation, he had also edited the "Spray" and looked after all of its business affairs.

In September 1888, beginning with the second year, he changed the "Spray of the Falls" from a monthly to a weekly, and started out with a circulation of 1,200. The load becoming too heavy for Mr. Fulkman to carry alone, as his capital was small, he endeavored to organize a limited stock company to publish the "Spray" and do a general printing business. He interested Dr. H. H. George, president of Geneva College, in the project, also J. L. McCartney of the same institution, and through these gentlemen he was placed in communication with George Warrington, of Birmingham, Iowa, who later came to Beaver Falls on a tour of inspection. After his arrival the preliminary steps for the organization of a stock company were taken, Mr. Warrington subscribing $500.00, Prof. McCartney $500.00, and Dr. George subscribed $150.00 for his son, M. M. George ; $600.00 was to be allowed for the paper and good will, $250.00 of 'W'hich was to go to the payment of outstanding bills, and $350.00 was to be alloted to Mr. Fulkman in stock in the new company. Officers Were elected, an attorney instructed to secure a charter, and everything looked favorable on the evening of October 18, 1888. The next morning Mr. Warrington came to the office of the "Spray" quite early, and announced his intention of withdrawing from the proposed company. He took the next train for the West, and the effort to organize a stock company fell. Mr. Fulkman continued the "Spray of the Falls" a few weeks longer, when he was compelled to dispose of it, and it was transferred to John H. Telford of the Beaver Falls "Tribune."

In addition to the papers of which he was part owner in Beaver Falls, he published the "Ellwood Eagle," for about four years, was associated with the "Ellwood Motor," and his last venture was the "Beaver County Eagle," which he started in New Brighton in November 1899, and which died in July 1900. His latest work in the county was on the weekly edition of the "Beaver Valley News," as circulation manager, which he resigned in September 1902, to accept a position in the office of the New Franklin Printing Company Columbus, 0hio, where he has the position of city manager. Centreville, Slippery Rock Twp., Butler Co., Pennsylvania. The Centreville Casket ceased publication, August 8, 1879. It was edited by W. S. FULKMAN, known as Stanley Fulkman, for about two years, then closed its short career and editor and office moved to the town of Beaver.

20th Century History of New Castle - p. 467

Notes as told by his daughter, Elsie E. (FULKMAN) BECKETT:

Ralph had gone to Cleveland, Ohio (year he went is unknown) to and stayed in his Aunt Clara's boarding house. Ralph worked in or around carnivals. Her daughter, Vera Naomi Cowan was living there also.

Ralph joined the Army when he was about 28 or 29 in 1918 through 1 919.

Taken from notes written by Elsie E. (Fulkman)Beckett: About 1921 the family moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Ralph work at the B. & B.Trunk Company on the North Side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania It was while they were living here that Vera left about February or March 1923 and a neighbor called Ralph at work that the children were crying in their apartment. He came home to find Elsie, in her crib, Warren running around and Harold gone with Vera. (It was Nov 24, 1923 that Olive Clair Fulkman was born, later her name was changed to Olivia Clair Wilmer when she was adopted.) Ralph brought his family up to Slate Lick, Pennsylvania to live with his mother and father, Ella and John N. Fulkman. Later that summer Ralph got a call from their mother's neighbor saying he ought to come to Cleveland to get their brother, Bill as he was running the streets, dirty, ragged and sadly neglected, which he did and brought him back. Children of RALPH FULKMAN and NAOMI COWAN are:
i. BABY GIRL6 FULKMAN.
It seems that when Harold Dayton Fulkman, the first son, applied for a replacement of a lost birth certificate late in his life, he found that a sister was born before him as his wife, Doris, stated in a letter, March 2003.
43. ii. HAROLD DAYTON FULKMAN, b. October 29, 1919, Pennsylvania; d. November 05, 1997, Painesville, Lake Co., Ohio.
44. iii. WARREN GILBERT HARDING FULKMAN, b. March 04, 1921, Pennsylvania; d. April 15, 1952, Allegheny Valley Hospital, Tarentum, Pennsylvania.
45. iv. ELSIE ELLEN FULKMAN, b. May 25, 1922, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania; d. April 02, 2001, Kittanning, Armstrong Co., Pennsylvania.
v. OLIVIA FULKMAN WILMER, b. November 14, 1923.

This notes were put together after Clara (now known as Olivia) searching for her birth family came to her sister, Elsie E. (FULKMAN) Becketts home to meet members of her birth family in the fall of 1997.

As told by Olivia upon her visit: In the summer of 1997, after many years of searching, Olivia, found her sister, Elsie at the age of 74. A friend of Olivia's found her father's Soc. Sec. # and then a phone number which was left in his name after his death, by his second wife, Lillian (Graybigle) Fulkman. After talking with Lillian she got Elsie's phone number and called her. She lived/lives east of Syracuse, in Jordan, New York and a reunion was planned for the fall of 1997.

Olivia found she also had a brother, Warren, who died some years before, and a half brother, Harold Fulkman, of Cleveland, Ohio and a half sister, Shirley (Fulkman) of California. Along with these siblings she gained many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Recollections of Olivia's revealed upon her visit when she drove down from her home near Jordan, New York in the fall of 1997. Directions were given to her by Elsie's sons, and they went to an intersection with a large sign "BECKETT" to catch her eye and have her follow them through the county roads to the Elsie's home.

Olivia remembers her adopted family consisted of one step brother, his wife and their 5 children.

Two doors down on Euclid Street from where Clara Olive "Olivia" was being raised lived a family who worked for the Salvation Army. They befriended Olivia, as she remembers Mr. Willmer playing with her especially as they would see her outside or on the sidewalk. They were Winfield Adrian Willmer and Nellie Rumaily (spelling unsure) Willmer, as Olivia remembers as being quite an unpleasant person. They also has a son, George Adrian Wilmer. At some point in this time period, the mother of Olivia or it may have been the grandmother, of Olilvia ( that would have been Clara Lock Cowan (Allen or Crawford) if the real mother, Vera Naomi/Naoma (Cowan)Fulkman had gone off somewhere, had to be hospitalized for "consumption". The Willmer's took Olivia into their home to care for her. It seems that sometime after that the mother or the grandmother of Olivia came home from the hospital and the Wilmer's continued to keep Olivia. The Willmer's may had had Olivia about 6 months, as the adoption writeup states.

Olivia recalls that in later years her step brother and his kids described Olivia's mother as tall and dark and a good cook. (Elsie E. Fulkm an-Beckett was sure this would have been the grandmother, Clara Locke-Cowan-then?? as she was tall and a good cook. The grandmother, Clara, also ran a boarding house which may account for the good cook aspect. Elsie recalls that their mother, Vera was not tall nor dark.) It may have been that their mother, Vera, had gone off and the grandmother, Clara, was raising her. (Just a note: So....maybe she was the one to sign the adoption papers instead of the real mother). Olivia remembers being in an orphanage called the "Humane Society Orphanage". It is unclear as to the sequence of events here. Death of grandmother or disappearance of the real mother or time left in orphanage until Willmer's adopted her.

Olivia remembers: Mr. Willmer had to travel to New York to take over the job of the printing of "The War Cry" magazine at the establishment there. He got settled and then went back to adopt Olivia.

A copy of the adoption paper give the date 26th day of February 1926 and a change of her name from Fulkman to Willmer. (note birth was Nov. 1 4, 1923, she was 2 years, 3,1/2 months old). She then went to live with them at 357 East 14 St., New York, New York. in an apartment. Olivia remember growing up in the atmosphere of the Salvation Army and was expected to be part of their performances and shows.

The son married a "Gerrie' Lawrence or "Jessie" for Jessica. It 's unclear which name might be a middle name Olivia said. This lady also came from a Salvation Army family. Her parents were Captains in the Salvation Army in Maine and all were musicians. It seems that Father Willmer also has a home in New Jersey. The son, George bought a farm in Hollingsworth, New York which is above the Five Fingers Lakes area not far from where Olivia now resides in Jordan, New York. It was here that Olivia had to work on the farm as a young girl. It's not clear as to whether the elder Willmer had died yet or Nellie, who was quite abusive towards Olivia as she remembers as were the kids of her step brother.

She has stated that she ran away when she was 13 or near that age, because the stepfather had died and he was the only kind one in the family and she was not going to stay with Nellie. Olivia states she worked up and down the eastern sea coast doing migrant work in fields from Atlanta up to ??

She states she always was looking for her roots in the towns she was near two, checking phone books, and etc as she knew her father was a Fulkman.

At one time in her life she was a model with one year schooling and one year working as a model and she brought pictures of her to show Elsie, her sister in the fall of 1997. She states that during the 40's and the war time she tried to get into the WAVES, but was denied because she did not have her adoption records or records of the orphanage or living parents to verify or sign for her. She was hoping to get in, get an education, and have retirement income and benefits. It's only been in the last few years that she has been able to gain access to her birth, adoption, and necessary papers to sort out her ancestry. It has cost her a lot in order to find her family.
